  • What is the best export setting for 4K video?

Posted by Benny Boo on April 21, 2018 at 2:40 pm

    Hello everybody.

    I shot a H.264, 4K video on Sony A7SII.

I edited the video on Premiere Pro, matching the clip setting with the timeline setting.

I cropped most of the clips %10. I thought this wouldn’t be a problem since I shot in 4k. However, I’m wondering if I should’ve edited my clips in a 1920×1080 timeline instead, if I want the best resolution. If I did that, I guess I’d have to zoom out each frame to see the original size, and then zoom in however I want. Would this give better resolution while exporting 2k? Or editing in 4k and exporting in 2k is better?

    Would really appreciate the help.

There are about 20 questions you did not ask but are more important.
What kind of scaling is applied on what kind of content being one of them.
(Look it up, there are at least 20 scaling algorithems, each with their own pros and cons.)
Then, are you required to deliver a specific resolution? If so, edit in that resolution.

What are you doing? Putting your puking cat / baby on Youtube?
How many people in your audience have a 4K monitor?

You do know that 99.X % of the money made in the movie industry was shot on LESS than 4K?

Did you do a test, looked at it, and decided what looks best?

Sorry to sound harsh, but really, you should have asked tons of questions before touching the cam.

I wasn’t the cinematographer. I’m the director. I wanted my film to be on 4k because we had a low budget on production and I already owned a 4k camera. We thought we could crop and have more options for certain shots.

I scaled up to 120 on Premiere while editing.

The purpose: this is a short film, so its a narrative fiction.
But I don’t think you read the question right. I am looking to export in 1920×1080.

I did read the question right, but you did not state your delivery format was 1920×1080.

If that is the case, change your timeline settings to 1920×1080, go trough it again and reformat if needed, then do whatever you think you must do, and be happy.
