color correction-auto contrast will maximize your black and white levels. It works exactly the same way alpha levels does for input black and white but does it in easy percentage. Also, local contrast effects (unsharps with selective alpha mattes) will increase the midtone contrast without blowing out whites or over darkening blacks as exampled in my free aep file. Don’t forget to reset the white balance too in color finesse. After you’re done with contrast and blown out highlights, finally remove grain, bump up the saturation, you’ll soon have some really nice footage. Have fun! and hey, you got CS5’s new roto so, you can always separate objects and enhance them so they stand out even more.

I feel like I need to add another post. You might be expecting the dirt remover to work wonders, and I wish it did, but most autodetection processes rarely work as well expecially when you have extremely grainy images. There’s a lot of clone brush work in there I’m afraid. Don’t forget remove grain, CC wire removal, but I doubt motion tracking will function so it will have to be manual too. Sorry for the bad news.

most likely the black outline can be isolated with an alpha matte.
duplicate the footage, add a channel-shift with alpha set to lightness in the dup. below that effect, add level individual controls with alpha set to input black and input white tweaked to isolate the blackest parts of the image.since you now have a clean outline, the alpha will only give glows to the colorful, bright areas fixing your problem.

don’t forget the best ones, forced perspective of an object far away with a close object, and steep shots where you can’t tell the ground is highly curved. cheap, but effective.

You’ve got a great attitude. Here’s my aep. It fixes the border errors because last time I forgot to precomp. I tested your picture and successfully removed dirt from the baby’s face. I didn’t spend alot of time tweaking it and you will need to roto some parts that aren’t correct and for the huge lines, you might have to use cc wire removal. The final controls are in “precomp for dirt remover.”
