I got the same error this morning. Encoded nearly entire sequence, then stalled and gave the error. Have not found a workaround yet (ended up recutting in FCP7), am going to play around with prefs etc. now that I’ve delivered. What’s your setup?

I’m running CS6.0.2 (creative cloud sub) on a Mac Pro (OS 10.6.8).

Thanks Shane! Complete user error. I had done everything except hold MCR button long enough…had forgotten the arcane mysteries of camera as reader.

October 10, 2012 at 2:52 pm in reply to: ATEM mixers “dropping” frames

As Justin asked – what is your setup exactly (cameras > converters? > HDMI or SDI in, etc, and the same back out.)

The only time I’ve had video synch issues among multiple cameras was when one (it only takes one) camera was set to a different frame rate than the other cameras (one @ 24P, everything else @ 29.97). In theory the ATEM shouldn’t have even seen the camera, but it did, and the cameras would go out of synch from time to time as you described (between 1 and 10 frames).

  • I would try to bring across a short piece to test first. I haven’t been able to successfully bring color correction across (either via the FC 3way or Colorista), but I haven’t investigated or tested too deeply.

Other than that, it’s easy to make the move, especially using the FC 7 keyboard shortcuts.

The more I use it, the more I like PPro’s 3way better than FC7 — many more options, but a lot more to learn for me. Not sure I would want to learn by regrading a feature myself, maybe a music video.

June 11, 2012 at 4:31 pm in reply to: Long MTS files (AVCHD) causing freeze/hang

I’m surprised it plays the MTS files as well as it does…I’ve learned to be patient and not go too crazy with fast shuttle and reverse.

I will add my voice, but overall I’m ok with a little AVCHD lagginess for what I save on disk space and transcode time.

For bigger/crucial projects I might transcode to gain some performance back.

My biggest complaint is file relinking — it’s so poor, it makes native MTS very dangerous unless I’m careful with file naming on import. If I don’t, I have to try to remember which one of the the fifteen or twenty 00003.mts files I used in a particular bin of a project. And PPro will happily link to any of them, correct or not.

We just finished our show, and the Ninja was fantastic. I’ve never used the KI pro, which looks great, but for size, price, and features, we loved the Ninja.

Easy to setup, and the touchscreen controls were easy and intuitive. Ninja auto-detected incoming video resolution, so recording was as easy as plugging in and hitting record.

Audio monitor boxes are tiny, but readable, and the monitor on the unit made confidence checking a breeze, just glanced over to confirm that the time code was running, meters were popping, and picture matched program.

The ninja does break the recording down into a number of 4GB files as it rolls, but after the show, we ejected the drive, swapped the housing, and loaded it directly into final cut. Ninja comes with two drive trays, so it’s easy to carry a backup and/or extra record drive. I did reformat the new drives in the Ninja before recording, but that was fast and easy.

The case it comes with holds everything, and was small and light enough to fit in my carry-on backpack.

We’ve also purchased a Rane Delay unit via ebay (they are $700+ new, but affordable on ebay), to be able to adjust synch easily on site. Since the rane is 1RU high it fits nicely in the case the TVS.

We used the 1 M/E switcher and own a TV studio, and have seen a few synch issues – with a variety of causes.

First off, triple check the frame rate of all your cameras – we had the greatest synch disruption when the frame rates were mismatched (everything was 1080i, but two cams were 24 and one was 29.97).

As other threads note, A/D converters can add delay, but it sounds like that’s not an issue for your setup.

You may also want to check the settings on your audio conversion box.

We’ve started to do synch tests whenever we change our TVS set-up, recording handclaps etc. to an ATOMOS ninja and checking via Final Cut.

We’re doing our first show with the TV studio and Atomos Ninja next week. I’ll post and let you know how it goes. Atomos is definitely more affordable, with the added advantage of being direct to edit.

We’re using a couple converters to make our cable runs SDI, but if we had the budget, we’d try the BM camera connector setup — long runs, with tally and talk over a single fiber line.

Regarding the “pro” connection question — I’ve become more comfortable/resigned to HDMI as viable semi-pro connector. We did a live web show last month with two HMC-150s going to the switcher via HDMI. One (mine) was even handheld. Only had trouble with the connector on the last day, and it was on the handheld. With gear this affordable, HDMI is going to be a given more and more.

November 3, 2011 at 5:40 pm in reply to: Network HD Broadcast Delivery

I feel your pain, but I was just suggesting not to hold your breath waiting for stations to all conform. There are dozens of different legal and acceptable flavors of HD (plus media types). Beyond that, they have different requirements for bars, tone, slate, count-down, and sometimes audio levels.

The only good news (to me), has been that more and more stations accept file delivery instead of tape; either through DG/Fastchannel, servers, ftp sites, or direct file services like Yousendit. That way I don’t have to go to a facility to layoff to tape when I don’t have the budget.

I wasn’t excusing the sales and ops staff — they just have trouble keeping up sometimes with the “little tech details.”

A client who has bought a lot of TV should be familiar with some of these issues. If not, just ask for delivery specs early on in the job, so at least you’ll know whether your worst case scenario is 4 versions or 14. And you can plan/budget accordingly.
