This reminds me of having to constantly educate my clients on the difference between DV or HDV(firewire)compression versus 8 bit uncompressed and 10 bit uncompressed workflows. It really does separate the men from the boys. I have edited for 20 years and have never used firewire or DV compression, finding them both lacking in quality and ability to composite and color correct cleanly. -

I am still waiting for the standalone HDDVD recorder that will simply have a component RGB input so that I can output HD in realtime to a stinkin’ HDDVD master! They have had the technology ready for four years!! Release it already you greedy SOBs! Only the Phillips standard DVD recorder has a RGB component input for recording, so at least I can get decent quality SD downconverts from my HD projects via the LH!

With the new 3.01 firmware upgrade, you don’t even need to use P2 MXF files at all anymore. The FS-100 now records 264 minutes of full HD 720Pn in Quicktime format that can be directly imported into FCP without any P2 import issues at all (wasted time importing/transcoding and/or dropped frames). I think I am in heaven. Using the HVX and being able to use the HD footage in either Macbook Pro or G5 with no rendering or having to buy the accompanying $30k tape deck. Quite prudential.

I actually had a problem with my Kona LH card performance on my dual G5 after the recent upgrade to DVD Studio Pro! I went to AJAs web-site and downloaded the most recent LH drivers, re-installed, and I am (gladly) back in business! I haven’t tried the IO out since the upgrades to FCP and DVD Studio Pro yet. Thanks for the heads-up!

Get a Firestore. They now do 264 minutes of HD 720Pn for about the price of one 8GB P2 card. You don’t even have to use the MXF format anymore and transcode when importing into FCP. Like Gary, I have not lost a single frame using this workflow, and it is very affordable. I’ll never go back to tape. I do however have plenty of old 2″, 1″, 3/4 tapes you can use as doorstops.

Actually the new version of Firestore does create Quicktime files. No P2 “organization” or FCP P2 conversion is necessary. It does seem like he tried to import the wrong folder from the Firestore or mistakenly only created a shortcut to the media files.

Fat 32 formatting does separate these files into 2:18:00 length clips,(unless you are using the new Pn mode which brings in continuous clips at over 5 minutes in length). When using 720P and importing using the P2 presets in FCP, my first set of continuous clips would come in spanned, but the rest come in as you describe. There seems to be no fixed standard to this behaviour. If you use the Quicktime mode, all clips will come in separately. This really shouldn’t be that much of a problem for you, either select them all and drag them in the timeline, and/or created a nested sequence once you have dragged the clips into the TL.
