Perhaps the best thing is to look at the code of the script. I might be able to optimize the code. If you want, feel free to send me the script via crgreen.com email links and I’ll take a look at it to determine if a little code massaging would help.

[phillr] “From the PC, the saved file was around 3.3 MB. I don’t *think* we used any ‘unique’ filters :S.”
Are you still having problems opening it, and do you need to? You could send me the file and I can see what I can do 🙂
(If you want to send it to me, use the email address link at crgreen.com, and please zip it first)

1. double-clicking the project file
2. opening from within ae (via file menu)
3. importing a project into the project window (double-clicking on empty space in project window is one way of doing this)question: what is the project’s file size?

Hi Jakob.
I would recommend trying my ‘Separate Masks in Layers’ script, available at https://www.crgreen.com/aesripts. Make a bunch of masks on your layer for the various animatable parts, then run the script to create new layers based on each of those masks — it includes an option for creating new anchor points at the center of each mask.
I hope this works for you …-CG

If it has a chance to display what it’s doing (“initializing fype engine”, “Scanning folder:”, etc.), see if there is a clue in what it’s doing right before it dies.
Check for a font problem — when I first started messin’ with AE7 a bad font crashed it. -
Make sure you have 32bit selected in the targa options dialog when you render in ae.
… maybe this is the issue ?

Nice find! Thanks for the link. Good for inspiration … I hope it sticks around.

Hi again, Andrew. It has occurred to me that it may be a good idea to update an ae script I have to work with (3D) data exported with SynthEyes. If you’re interested in helping out (mainly by exporting and sending .ma files), I’d appreciate it. You can email directly by going to crgreen.com.
Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification, Andrew. I know that SynthEyes has a pretty big, satisfied user base. I think what happened is my last employer asked me to use their brand new version on a project and it happened to be a ridiculously buggy version (OSX version, btw). If you (meaning ‘universal you’ … ‘ye’) find it stable, I would say it is so affordable, versatile and feature-packed it is not overkill at all. One of these days I’ll give it another go with an updated version …
In the meantime … I’m still happily HOE-in’!

SynthEyes is pretty darn cool, and very affordable, but in my experience, pretty darn unstable.
