  • There has been a lot written about this topic. I have my own correction technique but it’s late. Check out this https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1153069 to see what others were doing. It’s focused on ProRes but I think the issue was more widespread than just with that codec.

  • So exporting an OMF file, while preserving crossfades, also doesn’t work. AT least it would appear to me that STP does not read the crossfades. It can import the OMF but there’s no crossfades. I’ve always hated STP and now I have more reason to.

  • Yes the colour picker no longer works with the current OS. For me, El Capitan.

  • Someone suggested changing the timeline to H.264 and I see that’s what yours in. That could be your problem right there. Change your timeline to ProRes 422 (dupe your sequence if it makes you feel better), render everything, then try.

Thanks for the suggestion Graig. I read somewhere in my problem-solving that vs 4.3 was causing headaches to others and that a rollback to 4.2.2 might be the solution. So I did that and voila, first attempt, success!

I’ve had now to rollback both Motion and Compressor, both of which had subtle changes that were causing me problems. What’s up with that?

I like a good debate as much as anybody but it’s not going to solve the problem for which I created this thread. Yes, one day I’ll probably be working on FCP X and, now that lanes are starting to look like tracks, I might actually love it. Until then…

  • [Robin S. Kurz] “I’m sorry, but I have to ask: why would you be using Motion v5.3 when you’re on the age old FCP 6?”

Read above as to why I’m on the age-old 6. I’m also using El Capitan and as I’m sure you know, the previous version of Motion doesn’t work on it. 5.2.1 works just fine, but yes you do lose the ability to roundtrip which was great. As to why I upgraded to v 5.3, because I guess my mac is set to automatically download and update new software! – which I’ve now taken control of.

6 might be age-old software and yes, it is giving me lots of headaches these days (with random crashes, especially). But I can’t imagine limiting oneself to an age old operating system when there have been so many great advancements that make the overall computer experience that much better.

  • [Bret Williams] “So make sure you’re interpreting the file as premultiplied black and you should be ok.”
It’s not the same as Straight alpha, at least when using text. It’s like the text is sitting on a black version of the text that is quite noticeable especially during fades. I too sent Apple a bug report as I hope it’s just an oversight that they didn’t include the ability to deselect Premultiply Alpha. Moving back to 5.2.1.

[Bret Williams] “PS – why on earth are you using FCP 6?”
Because that’s the version I was on when Apple switched to FCP X. Too expensive to upgrade to v 7 considering it’s support had just been discontinued. And I had just begun a feature doc that is now 8 years in the making (both on screen and behind), and haven’t felt comfortable migrating to something new until it’s finished.

All you can do is run tests and go with the best camera/system. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

I have a Canopus ADVC 100 but it’s been years since I used it, prior to the invention of TB. I remember it adding a bit of video noise to the image, and that was just with a FW 400 cable. Maybe the newer models are better.
