Agree with John. I personally can’t wait to finish the project I’m on (using 6.0.6) so I can upgrade to FCP X and start fresh.

I’ve been running vs 6.0.6 with El Capitan. It’s only High Sierra that will prohibit the use of FCP, am I right. Mind you, like what Nick said, there are a few glitches. Colour dropper for colour matching/correcting doesn’t work. And I get crashes if I hit the undo command too many times in a row. Anytime I have to undo something, I always save first!

If you’re computer is 2014, just revert to the OS at the time and don’t upgrade to High Sierra. You might need Snow Leopard to begin the installation though.

Hey thanks all. Didn’t consider that with the x/y coordinates but I’m fine there. Also, I’ve been starting with a ‘return’ on single line titles, then normal on two-line titles, so that everything is bottom aligned. I guess I just figured this out on my own.

I used drop shadow, knowing I could copy and paste that attribute along the entire layer if I ever wanted to change the styling. Now I’m curious to try outline instead. Aw man. I think I’d have to redo each one individually..? Well, there’s a day.

Thanks for the offer Bouke but I have done all the titles myself. Eventually, I will need to read up more on exporting an srt file so that I can easily switch up the languages. Lots to do still!

  • It’s an extra generation though. Much cleaner to just transcode straight from the source, no? Especially with lots of subtitles.

  • Alright, so after a gazillion tests, I set an end point 5 frames back and voila, it works! I had earlier tried 1 frame back and it failed. Very bizarre but I’ve successfully transcoded twice now using this method.

  • Hi Philip, well believe me this is my last project with FCP. It’s a doc that spans 8 years in the life of child labourer in India and so I’ve been cutting with FCP since the beginning. When X came out, I looked into upgrading to 7 but it was so bloody expensive and had just been declared EOL. Point is, what I’m trying to do now I just did a couple months ago. And I can do for most of the project, just not all of it. So trying to find a workaround still..

  • The piece is 122 minutes. I tried transcoding the first hour and it works. I tried transcoding the second hour and it works. I tried 105 minutes and it failed. What is the culprit?

I know I can export a self-contained QT and it will probably work. But the file size will be over 100 GB and this used to work all the time. What gives?

Thanks for the responses. I googled this a little more yesterday and what I should have said was that I’m trying to achieve a fixed left margin. You can’t do that in fcp unfortunately. So for every new city, for example, I have to enter new x coordinates if I want it justified to the same left margin. For a feature doc, that gets to be tedious.

That said, I ran another test comparing fcp’s text to Motion and Motion kills it hands down. I’m using yellow/gold for my cities and there’s a halo effect in fcp?

Andreas, I’ll look into your suggestion a little later. Thanks for chiming in!

  • What do you mean wants to freeze? Is FCP unresponsive? I’ve done this many times. I’ve discovered that the camera has to be on, with the heads engaged, BEFORE I launch FCP though. It won’t recognize my camera if I turn it on on afterwards or after it’s been left to idle.

Hey what did you do? I have the same camera and I too am wondering how worth it it is to spend money repairing a 9 Yr old camera. Probably better to just invest in a new 4K camera… but not cheap either.
