Many thanks to all! This sounds straight forward enough! I’ll give it a try in the bay.

Thanks Walter, you’ve confirmed that my brain can still make a few good deductions after all these years in front of those big CRTs.

Hey Adam, Download “Rember” for free and it will test your ram for you. You can also run Apple Hardware Test disc which should have been included with the machine. If you use rember, it will tell you there’s an error and you’ll have to do a trial and error by pulling the modules out and rerunning Rember to ID the bad module. Hope this helps!

October 9, 2008 at 6:17 pm in reply to: Crashing & Boot Disk Disappears

I finally diagnosed my own problem. After the first computer died, I scavenged the ram to install into the 2nd. My OSX purchase was a single disc and didn’t have the hardware test disk anywhere. I also understand that Apple doesn’t carry those anymore. I went online and downloaded Rember, a ram testing program, and was able to find the bad module through elimination. It was the same ram I had brought from the first. Now I probably own two good g4s. So far, so good as I’ve had several large ram eating apps open at the same time and no freezing, crashing or disappearing hdds. Hope this helps the next guy!

Hey John, thanks for the reply. If my required delivery is DVC PRO HD, aren’t I always going to have recompression, either on import to DVC PRO HD codec or on mastering of an HDV native timeline to a DVC PRO HD tape? Thanks for your thoughts!

    Kind Regards,

Well Sam, the only thing I’ll say is – how would you feel if your camera work or creative edits were used by someone else without permission or credit? Best of luck with your moral dilemma!

August 15, 2008 at 3:15 pm in reply to: Raid for M100 v8 (Mirrored Drive Doors G4)

Hi Joe, I’ve been using a 2.5TB sata raid with my m100i 8.2.3 for over 2 years starting on an 867 machine and now on my MDD 1.42ghz system. I purchased a “roll your own” from Mac Gurus and they sent me case with sleds. Got my drives on sale and it all went together easily. I purchased a sonnet tempo x4p sata card which has been flawless. I highly recommend Mac Gurus and the owner Rick. They are extremely knowledgable on all mac systems. I had one glitch where the raid wouldn’t mount and I called and Rick the owner walked me through a couple of tests. He then sent me a replacement part (Free!) that installed easily and completely fixed my problem. This was 18 months AFTER I bought the machine. Who offers that! Mac Gurus raids use port multipliers so my 5 drive raid only uses 1 sata port on the card. I’ve still got 3 more ports for storage expansion. Can’t say enough good things about these guys. Just search their name and the website will pop up. When I use external FW drives on my M100i I seem to crash because the FW spins down. Maybe it’s just me – but I love my Sata Raid! You should be able to build your own 2.5 TB(2.3 usable) with seagate drives for around $1200. A 5 TB (4.6 usable) will run you around $1700. Best of Luck!
    Kind Regards
    Chris K.
