highly discouraged to edit apple pro res files
Who ever told you that is WRONG.
After you transfer your P2 files to the comp. Choose Log & Transfer in FC to bring in your clips. This will convert them to DVCPROHD if that is what you shot OR If you shot AVC intra you have the choice to bring it in as Pro-res or DVCPRO HD codecs.
Edit in Pro-rez and output current settings – this is broadcast quality.
You don’t revisit the raw P2 files.Now, there is a plug-in that will allow you to edit in the raw MXF files and skip the step of transcoding them to .mov’s

If your shooting to SD cards then they are probably compressed .h264 files and NEED to be transcoded to a format for editing like Pro-res .MOV files.
Have you looked into Adobe Premiere?

You should export “Current Settings” (ref file is fine)
Drop that file into compressor or any compression software and then create your webclips/DVD files/Etc.
Exporting “Uncompressed” before going to mpeg2 isn’t going to gain you anything. This just adds a step of compression.

Try deleting renders and re-render.

I tried running the show through compressor, but it turns the 720×486 to 640×480
Where are you viewing the 640X480? Quicktime does not always show the true pixels.

A mpeg2 SD clip outta compressor should yield a 720X480 clip.

Nice. You’re on the right track. This will yield much better results.
Keep in mind that SD will never look as sharp as HD. Just the way it is.
Text will suffer from compression. Try to avoid small thin fonts will help.When your mpeg files are complete and if you have room on the disc for more, recompress at a higher rate.
You can fit 4.2GB or so on a single side disc. This will help you maximize your quality to space ratio.Chris Tompkins

Aspect ratio 4:3 (because I made a sequence 1920×1440 and dropped my 1920×1080 into it. – NO
Choose 16 by 9, your edit is HD. You should make a 16X9 DVD
Don’t nest your comp, don’t make a custom size comp.
Edit HD native size to video.
Output a ref movie file.
drop that file into compressor
choose SD DVD 16X9 Letterbox
frame control set to best.
