720P is HD
Go in to the menu and change the camera mode to 480i

The cam will not Down-convert out the FW port.

Double Click the file in the browser.
Make your in/out points.
Grab the Hand icon to drag into Sequence.

You are ripping DVD footage, you are starting @ the bottom of the food/quality chain already.

Rip the DVD’s to DV50 files for starters. You’ll be working in a better color space. Anything above that is wasted coming from a DVD.

DV is the worst.

You said you shot 1920X1080 why is your squence not the same?

Did you drop a clip into a new sequence @ the start and let FCP set the settings?

Why not export “Current Settings” making a reference file?
Drop that file into Your compression software?

Shutter off should not cause any issues.
Do you shoot in low light?
Auto shutter to a speed of 30 or something indoors at night?
Can you post a snipit?

Making a self contained file exported from you sequence is when you:

1. Are taking that file OFF the machine to be worked on another.
2. Archiving Master.

Making a ref file:

1. Saves hard drive space.
2. Links back to original material.
3. Makes a temp file to create something else.
4. Deleted when done with it.

Self-contained or Ref file make no dif.
After exported file, drop that file into Episode or Compressor or your compression software fo choice to create the SD DVD files – this can take hours to compress @ high-quality settings.

Compressing from HD material to a SD DVD can take a long time on older machines.
I have seen 15 hour renders doing this.
