You are using Toast to create the DVD mpeg2 file – BAD.
You are using DVDSP to create the DVD mpeg2 file – BAD.

Export your sequence – “Current Settings”

Drop that file into compressor.
Adjust frame controls.
Adjust data rate.
Take the finished DVD ready files into DVDSP.
Burn.

NO, your camera does not shoot mov files. You need the Canon plug-in for FCP.

You bring in the files via Log & Transfer converting to prores on ingest.

When the edit is complete.
Export “Current Settings” Self contained. This is your digital master.

Take that file into a Compression software.
Create the file needed for playback.

I understand. Likely things will improve getting away from the NTFS formatted drives.

Can you just drag files off it to another.

Re-format Mac Happy.

You would shoot HD
Edit HD

Probably 1920×1080, 25p

HD is a widescreen format.
Export finished video AS IS. “Current Settings”

Drop that file into your compression software and create your SD DVD files or whatever delivery format you need.
There, you choose letterbox, Widescreen, Center Punch, Etc.

I recommend you keep the widescreen aspect ratio. This will FILL the screen for those viewing on a widescreen TV and will LetterBox for those viweing on a 4X4 TV.

NTFS has always been a windows HardDrive format, why are the drives your are using for editing on a mac formatted that way?

No, of course not. DVD is highly compressed. NO way around it. There is quality loss.

UNLESS, they burned you a DATA disc and put the mov files on there for transporting to another machine.

But an actually DVD, like they recorded straight to a DVD recorder. Not advised unless there is NO editing.

If the DV and the DVD were interlaced, you are ripping it to DV, then you want it to be interlaced.

So, you’re playing it off a computer then? Laptop or desktop.
Ya, H.264 would be fine.
Make a high quality H.264 mov file from your master.
