September 28, 2013 at 12:22 pm in reply to: MC7: transcoding 2k ProRes4444 to 1920×1080 DNxHD – apect ratio questionThanks Michael – therein lay the problem!
Of course my original Arri files are 2048×1152 which i suddenly realised **is** 16:9 (1.777 ratio)
I was so used to working with 2048×1536 i didn’t realise for a moment that no reformatting/ letterboxing would be necessary
Thanks so much for your help – i feel silly now! -

thanks so much for your help.
(Back story: I’m not in front of my avid – making things very difficult – i can’t just experiment – i’m actually helping out my assistant editor who’s in the US while i’m abroad)
2:37 and 2:40 seem to be the only options a first.
And we cant seem to make the blue selection box “bigger” than the image. We’d expect to see black bars top and bottom of the lower image right? But everything we try seems not to produce the desired result. The only way my assistant has been able to manage this is by changing the upper boxes as you see in the image below.. which i suspect we do not want to do (changing the pixel aspect ratio degrades the image…)

Any further help would be really appreciated!!!

Yes i’d like to have access to all the ISOs that are not either mixdowns, empty or duplicated and am hoping that by doing that at the syncing stage i won’t be creating problems for myself…. (I do this in FCP and think it should be fine in MC – sorry – i’m probably being too cautious!)
I like to do this so i can tell if some edit i am doing is broadly going to work without the need for ADR or other excessive audio work. (Eg. busy dinner table scene with ISOs on each actor)

Thanks you guys – for features i’m more used to FCP (hence this confusion) and for TV docs (where i just bring in all the audio anyway) AVID.
I get that the 7.1 wouldn’t work but I’m actually still not quite clear what the best option for syncing is if i want to edit with just the useful ISOs…
If it’s not multicam – can i lay out my clips in a sequence, bring in all audio and remove the mixdown track & any empty ISOs, then make sub seqs & autosync?
Sorry if i’m being dense….

Hello Michael,
i’d like to piggy back on this thread and ask you (anyone!) to clarify if that’s ok?
Just want to check that you mean “only selecting the mix-down track (say A1) while syncing” Then when creating my AAF using synced clips made in this way, is there an option to bring all audio tracks in again?
Or i guess when editing if i need to i could match frame back to the original multitrack audio if I need to use ISOs – Is that what you mean? But actually, I like to edit with ISOs all the time – especially with features /films with lots of dialogue – during the syncing i remove any empty audio tracks (and the mixdown track) then autosync my clips – would you say there’s a better way or any problems with this way in Avid?
All the best.

I still need to get comfortable with it / practice more but i can highly recommend learning some basic rsync commands in the mac terminal
I know a great DIT who was teaching me how to do all these things so i can clone drives efficiently (check one drive against another, check for copying errors, add only new files to Drive B or remove files that are not on Drive A etc etc)When it all gets too much (i am still learning) renaming mxf folders works well too if you are organised from the start. I find listing by date introduces too much chance for human error – but it’s good in a pinch.
best

March 10, 2013 at 10:06 pm in reply to: Render speeds and configuration – how fast is your Resolve?A related question if anyone can help?? I’ve been working on a feature for a few weeks & have used the same setup each day for transcoding.
4444 files from the Alexa transcoding to 422 while applying LUTs & burn ins .
Using a retina MBP. Connected via TB to a Pegasus or GRaid & going out via esata to a storage drive.I used to get 8 or 9 fps – and now without changing anything (that i can think of) i’m getting 26fps.
Has anyone experienced this or similar or can hazard a guess at why the sudden speed improvement?

December 3, 2012 at 9:01 pm in reply to: Audio Auto Sync – Is it possible to slip audio after auto syncing?Hi there,
just to hop on the end of this thread with a related issue
I’m making dailies with LUTs and and a burn in & syncing audio within Davinci Resolve Lite 9.0.3
In the case that audio is out of sync (camera/magic slate issue) i have tried slipping the audio manually first in the timeline & all seems fine.
But then when i add those timelines to the render queue & export them – the audio in the resulting clips is off as if i had not tweaked the sync manually to fix them.
Quite frustrating. If anyone knows some schoolboy error i may be making i’d love to hear some ideas.
Best

May 17, 2011 at 3:50 pm in reply to: Conform FCP Red Project to Original R3D’s from ProRes TranscodesCan i jump in here and ask a related question? Hope that’s ok..
I’m working on a RED project where our camera guy has made prores files in redcine-x for me but then re-named them. Thankfully the actual R3Ds are intact as is in their original folders.
Due to time constraints i had to start cutting with the pro res he had given me.
Looking at the files in FCP they have a reel name (A002_C058_03082G)
and timecode – so does anyone know – will they be ok to re-link when we go to an online? Or do i have to re export and re edit….. (I really hope not)Thanks a lot – hope I have given enough info…
