Yes, indeed… a particularly nasty workflow.

I would think that the best way to do the upconvert would be Teranex – that’s what the guys who did “Dust to Glory” used to upconvert their MiniDV footage…

And, as others have recommended, you definitely want to do an uncompressed rip from your DVD.

    Best of luck…

Yes, I did… program identified around 75-80 timecode breaks, which, interestlngly enough, is probably close to the number of audio dropouts in the resulting .mov

The DVD I’m extracting from wasn’t authored per se, but recorded on a DVD recorder…

    1. I *so* want a MacBook Pro

    2. I don’t know nearly enough about Photoshop CS2

    3. Standard Def really, really sucks

    4. Despite what people tell you, always take insurance on your BlackJack when dealer is showing an Ace

    5. The Riviera is a very advantageous place to stay for NAB

    6. After the first couple, $6 for a Heinekin really doesn’t seem all that obscene

Yep… this is probably a corollary to “read the manual”

I did call NAB registration, and their answer is that you do *not* need to sign up for individual sessions ahead of time, *unless* you are planning on doing Certification Exams. You *do* need to sign up ahead of time for Certification Exams.

    “LA ain’t all that anymore”

Jeez… I’m so freakin’ glad I’m moving my wife and I here from Florida!

I’ve faced a similar decision lately… I had a comfortable life in Florida – I was one of *the* guys in my market for editing/post consulting, etc…. granted, my wife and I don’t have kids at this point, so it’s a little easier… but the thought I kept coming back to was the fact that, if I stayed, I’d never get a chance to work on a feature, never get the chance to work on a high-end episodic series, etc…

Good luck with your decision – remember that family comes first… you’ll have your family long after your career…

  • Scanned some pages from a technical magazine… wanted to simply email a .pdf to somebody, but would like to send 1 .pdf, instead of 5 .pdfs (one for each page).

Scanned the pages using Epson software that came with the scanner.

Not familiar with Distiller… who makes it?

  • Personally, I like Combustion for Motion Tracking/Stabilizing…

If you like, I’ll be happy to take a look at an MPEG thumbnail for you, and evaluate chances of a good fix, and how long it might take.

Drop me an email, if you like.

You obviously didn’t read my post… the reference to Adrenaline was because it was mentioned in the post I was responding to.

If you had read my post, you’d see I like both Avid and FCP, and I use them both. I can accomplish anything I want using either. As far as multi-layering and compositing, they’re both limited compared to After Effects.

Glad to hear you’re having success….

Yeah, the DV software will probably be sufficient to keep you fresh on Avid. Not as many features, certainly, but the interface is quite similar.

Tell you what… you can go ahead and give me your Adrenaline jobs… I’ll be happy to do them without complaining. Do people really call you back after all your moaning about PC’s, and your insistence on using FCP?

I know both, and there are things about both that I like… I think Avid’s trim function is more advanced/streamlined than FCP at this point… 1 trim tool for Avid, 4 trim tools for FCP… on the other hand, I think Avid’s Segment Mode is retarded. I am equally comfortable on either PC or Mac platform… although I definitely appreciate the ease/simplicity/logic of the Mac way.

I have to believe that, as a freelancer, you are much more marketable by knowing both, and keeping fresh and fast on both. If someone is willing to pay me my rate to edit for them, I’ll be happy to cut on whatever system they have… I’ll save my opinions until I’m asked “what type of system should I build?”
