    Hey John,
I wasn’t able to see this before I started the process, but I began exporting proxy files from AE6 in the .mp4 format (Half quality @ 1200×675), with the “Set Proxy” option.
Once all my files are exported as proxies (today or tomorrow), I will begin the basic cut in SV12, and try to get it into After Effects to relink the files from the proxies.
My problem is with this (as I’ve never handled a video workflow before), is how to do this..
    – should I use XML or EDL for Vegas -> After Effects? (amateur question!)
    – how do I relink once I get the project into AE6?
    – once I have my clips relinked in AE6, since I have to do more complex editing such as layering tracks, stabilizing motion, etc… is there a way for me to just drop these full, 2.5K project files from AE6 back into Sony Vegas.. i’m assuming there is a way but I wouldn’t be surprised if I were wrong.
Or do I have to finish the editing in After Effects itself … or Premiere Pro via dynamic link (which I’d really not like, I still haven’t learned much of it yet). ?

    Thanks

Ok, thanks Angelo I’m going to try this tonight, as well as look for the script.
For creating the clips to go into Vegas, would it be easier to just individually go to each clip, right click and select “Create Proxy”?
Rather than just adding it to the render queue and selecting an output?

I’m not quite sure what the difference between the two methods are.

    Thanks

    Hi, Angelo
    thanks for your reply
So let me get this straight…

I imported all my footage, did my camera raw editing, and left them up in the left panel where all my clips are aggregated..

What I need to do now is drag all my clips to a single new composition, then go to the render queue and export the clips as smaller proxy files. I open these up in Vegas, do my editing, then export my final timeline in Vegas as an XML.

I can then reopen my XML file in AE6, and my timeline will be preserved I’m assuming.. then I go about replacing these files with the RAW files.
How exactly do utilize this replace command?
Time constraint isn’t an issue, but i’d like to have this going at a steady pace. I don’t mind taking the extra time as long as the quality is preserved when I relink the files, and my project gets edited in SV.

    Thanks

  • You’re correct, I won’t be buying anything far in advance before purchasing the camera! Plus i was going to get the lenses from Adorama, not eBay.

I’m going to get an 8, 12, and 17.5 lens for 24/35/50 equivalents.

Thanks for Abel’s tool, it seems extremely helpful for all crop factor situations.

I’m waiting until test footage comes out before go ahead and make the pre-order, but it’s going to take some pretty mediocre shots for me to cancel the process. Waiting for Brawley’s review!

  • Thanks Peter!
The crop factor is tough, but I realize the crop factor is relative only to stills cameras and S16 is fairly standard for cinema.

The issue is that a 35mm lens becomes a tele.. I’m kinda trying to stay on the (comparatively) wider/standard side (24-50mm). I was going to get the Rokinon 8mm/14mm (EF) and SLR HyperMagic 12mm (MFT) lenses, since they are cine lenses, fairly well-reviewed, and stay in the standard range.

Is this a process you would recommend?

Hi Matt, thank you for your reply.

I was tossing the idea back and forth in my head, and yes I definitely do feel that I could benefit from having a zoom lens, even though the Zeiss is higher-quality.

In this case, which two zoom lenses would you recommend, given a $2,000 budget for lenses alone?
It seems like you are very satisfied with the Tokina, but what about colors? Contrasts? etc. Not expecting amazing color/contrast and overall quality compared to Zeiss lenses, but what are the best 2 that work with this budget?

    Thanks
