It is possible the sample rate on your tape and your project settings do not match. Open up the browser and see what the sample rate of your audio is.
Sometimes it comes in at 32K if the camera was set up that way. If it is, change the sample rate of your project to match.

I have the same Firmtec 4 banger that Tom has. Here in Arizona though, a little extra ventilation is a good thing, as my edit bay is really hard to cool.
So, I bought a little tower fan at Fry’s to blow over the unit, and have survived two summers with it so far.

Yes, right, one of the biggest telltales of an inexperienced editor is exactly what you point out. A slug or solid on top is the best way to dissolve in or out.

Disconnect your deck and quit FCP. Then connect the deck, and then fire up FCP. It should see the deck and you should be good.

HDV is tiny, basically the same as DV. Open the files in QuickTime and open the inspector to see what they really are.

Go into your sequence settings and change the compressor to ProRes. All graphics will look better. BTW the speed of your scroll can have an effect on the look, I’d try Boris Title Crawl. Very nice for this.

I make a 5 or so second slug to put over the beginning and end of all my layers, and keyframe the opacity on each, say 7-10 frames. This makes a clean dissolve on everything.
