I am very fond of the Nattress Film Effects filters for this sort of thing- great results & very cheap. The G Film – Soft Diffusion would be a good choice- you should be able to dial in a great look with it. As the others have said, you do need to start with good lighting.

OK, I took the plunge. So far I have found only one major bug- when used as a plugin in Final Cut, RED windows can get stuck to the cursor- as you move the cursor, the last window you clicked on moves as well. Also, the scrubable numbers in the input windows can also get stuck to the cursor. This only happens occasionally but is more than annoying. Restarting FCP alleviates the situation but then it comes back. Hopefully it won’t happen too often. At least they fixed the superscript bug.

Also be aware that there are some filters (not just Boris) that do not render correctly with the Apple 10 bit uncompressed NTSC codec. They render fine with other codecs, like the 8 bit or DV. I suspect it has something to do with the “high precision YUV rendering” enabled in 10 bit.

By any chance do you have one of the older models of the HD-100 camera that has not had the firmware upgraded? This was a constant problem with HD-100, fixed in the HD100a and later.

While RT can be improved by using uncompressed standard definition codecs and hardware from companies like Blackmagic you should be aware that there is also a down side. This is latency. When working with DV25 most people are just viewing on their computer display. When working with hardware driving an external monitor you are pushing 2 very different displays at the same time which can cause lag. If you add RT to that you can have situations where there can be a delay of a second or more before playback can start, or even a still of your current composite can be displayed- the beach ball just spins. This happens most often with unlimited RT so I usually run in the safe setting. Setting external monitoring in FCP to single frame or turning it off completey should help but does not. Just wanted to let you know so it isn’t an unpleasant surprise.

BTW, I am not putting down the idea of uncompressed and external hardware- the quality is vastly better and you can see what the output really is, instead of an approximation. I just wish there were a way to make editing on FCP as responsive as it is on an AVID.

Are you doing the shift-lock trick? (Delete the cache, start FCP with lock on, immediatly quit, then start FCP with lock off). There is a known issue with Boris and FCP 5.1.1 where the controls for Boris disappear but are restored by this trick.

I don’t know if FCP Rescut could causing trouble- It has definitly saved my bacon in the past.

Noticed that the speed of the 3.0 Intel quad is listed as being up to 1.4x as fast as the G5 quad… which itself is not all that much faster than the G5 dual for most FCP usage. Clearly their claim of 2.1X as fast ast the G5 has to be taken with a grain of salt… Wish they would compare Apples to Apples 😉

I have a Multibaridge Extreme connected to a mackie mixer. I do not hear the noise that you speak of. Are you running the main (XLR) outputs from the Multibridge into the mixer or are you using the monitor (RCA) jacks? I am using the XLR’s.
