I tried the MPEG Streamclip, when I hit the “conversion” button – I tried a couple different settings, all it seems to convert is the first frame. Even if the file says a clip is 123MB or 43 seconds long, etc. If you stick with the 1440 x 1080i MXF settings, you’d better try other MXF converter tool to transcode and even deinterlace your 1080i MXF files to fast import to your Avid program. Till now, MTS is still not an ideal editing format for most of the NLE system including FCP, Avid MC, iMovie as well. For that reason, like Avid Media Composer has pushed the plug-in like AMA for user to link MTS video clips directly into Avid program. But some users still do not have the luck. Personally I don’t want to waste time and energy to find a workable plug-in for importing my MTS footage into Avid. Since some guys told me the best editing format for Avid is the DNxHD codec, a simple and fast solution would be to transcode all of you raw AVCHD MTS to Avid supported DNxHD. I recently purchased a Sony NEX-FS700 and have been finding any excuse to use it. I even use it around the house to record the most mundane things, which of course look AWESOME at 240fps – pouring hot water in a tea cup, lighting a match, my brother giving his baby a kiss. Well, I’m currently having a problem JUST like you while importing some 50p footage shot on an FS700. I know that FCP doesn’t support 50p footage, so I am unable to edit Sony NEX-FS700 AVCHD files in Final Cut Pro 6/7 or FCP X on mac as FCP can’t support MPEG4 AVC/H.264 encoded AVCHD files well. A quick Google suggest that Compressor, but not a good enough output quality as my expectation. Finally I got the solution from a relevant thread:

As far as I know, XAVC is a new recording format which can support 4K resolution (4096 * 2160 and 3840 * 2160) at up to 60 fps. However, .xavc is still not as popular as other kinds of video formats such as AVCHD and MXF. So when you deal with the XAVC/XAVC-S footages, for example, importing Sony XAVC to FCP or other Mac tools like QuickTime, Avid MC, Premier Pro, you may encounter some format compatibility or video/audio synchronization problems. The best solution I’ve found would be transcoding XAVC to a Mac compatible format for you editing program like Apple ProRes for FCP, MPEG-2 for Adobe Premiere Pro, DNxHD for Avid Media Composer.

There are two typical issues from the Premiere users quoted as below. Playback is jerky or Unsupported file format/codec. Since we can’t use AVI files in Premiere as source video files and have them look good at all, why not try to convert these AVI to a Premiere Pro most compatible format e.g. MPEG-2.

I have recorded many 1080P video when I travel via Panasonic GH3 camera, the recordings are in .MTS video format, now I would like to import these projects to Avid media composer 5.5 for editing. What I want is to edit MTS files natively in AMC 6 on Macbook, but I always encounter importing problems due to the video codec. So how to import and convert GH3 MTS to Avid MC natively? In that case, I chose to convert AVCHD .mts files to DNxHD codec without quality loss before transferring GH3 60p/50p AVCHD to Avid MC for editing. I think the workflow is available here.

Update the Avid to the recent version is the smart choice. And there are some AMA plug-ins launched to solve the importing problems, while when you transferring MTS files from CX160 to Avid MC, there are still some incompatible problems come up. If your AMA plugin doesn’t work well with the footage, you also directly reformat MTS files to Avid DNxHD and putting to Media Composer for editing.

We need more info about your MXF footage. I had some MXF video clips from my Canon XF100. The MXF files are not well supported by Premiere Pro CS6, as you may encounter many audio and video problems. And I know that Premiere Pro CS6 can render to the part of MXF format, but it can’t handle raw MXF files. So, how to import Canon MXF footage in Premiere Pro CS6 for editing smoothly? Can Avid import and edit MP4 files from Sony PMW-EX3 natively?

The XAVC codc with Sony F55 seems not be able to supported well by Avid. There is a possible solution to edit Sony F55 video in Avid MC: try to transcode the XAVC files. You can search a video convert app to make it. Brorsoft Video Converter is the one I applied. It comes with the Avid natively supported format DNxHD codec.
