[Noah Kadner] “Background rendering ceases when you quit the app- same thing in just about any app that allows you to do this.”
What about FCP7? If you stop a render, it will render whatever portion of the clip that is finished at the time.

Wait, do you mean that it just cancels whatever has been rendered, or does it actually toss away the original clip too?

That sounds like a bit of hyperbole. I see zero chance of this happening, especially the high end post houses “coming around.” That won’t happen in 5 years, much less one.

July 18, 2011 at 4:33 am in reply to: What software to choose for a video editing course? As an educator, I’ve often heard the “the tools don’t matter” argument from other people in education. While it seems logical, my years as a professional also tell me that it is not reality. People who make hiring decisions frequently look ONLY for the person who has SPECIFIC experience on a specific platform. Though you and I may know that an FCP editor could figure out Premiere in a day or two, employers are unfortunately not always so enlightened.
To truly be viable you need to have BOTH the talent, and the specific skills to use a specific tool. An Emmy award winning editor, could not get hired if they only knew CMX.
I am in a similar situation, needing to implement a curriculum for my department. Luckily, I’m grandfathered in to an Apple ELP license, and also have the CS5.5 Production PRemium license. I plan to teach 4 NLE programs and After Effects. I will teach FCP7, PRemiere, and even FCPX (crappy or not, it may help get a job). I will also teach a 3.5 week course in Media Composer, having the students install the trial on their computers.
It’s a ton of information to absorb, and even more to lesson-plan, but it really does seem to be the best way to future-proof their instruction as much as possible.

[Sean Thomas] “This is why a few of us have said (somewhat jokingly) “All the haters go somewhere else” so we can learn and talk about X.”
And that’s why so many are offended. This is a FCP X forum, not at “FCP X only if you like it” forum. This is for all viewpoints, and should be an open exchange of ideas. Your statement, even if somewhat jokingly, is just like the people who used to say “If you don’t like the way Bush is running the country, then why don’t you leave.”
I’ll respond the same way now that I responded then. H-E-double-hockey-sticks no, I’m not going to leave. If I don’t like something, I’m going to speak out about it, and do my best to change it. Even if I may not have the power to change it, I’m not going to stop speaking out about it.
If I see something as a pile of garbage, then I am going to tell everyone that I think it’s a pile of garbage, whether it’s a president or a editing application. And if you tell me it isn’t a pile of garbage, I am going to disagree loudly if I feel strongly about it. I think FCP X is a pile of garbage, and until it stops being a pile of garbage, I’ll keep saying that it is. I think I have that right.
If you don’t like it, I’m sure you can easily skip past all my posts, and I won’t take offense. If you want to argue about it, I won’t take offense either. If you tell me to shut up about my opinion, I’m definitely going to take offense, but even then I’m still willing to debate you on it.
Be warned, though, I’m stubborn, and have the summers off.

[Sean Thomas] “I don’t know what to call this mentality: ignorant, arrogant, pittyfull, blind, whatever – but it’s sad.”
I know what I’d call the mentality of that statement: arrogant and myopic. You’re basically doing what you accuse the “elite pros” of doing.

[Daniel Frome] “Yikes…comparing a struggle for political freedom with a bad software release. I’ll have the historical record show that I’ll abstain from further comment.”
That’s why I was clear to point out that part about “FCPX not being 1% as important” as the situation I was comparing it to. If you still can’t touch the topic, that’s fine. There are plenty of us on here who aren’t afraid to dabble in a bit of rhetoric and conjecture. Maybe even a little vitriol to keep things interesting.
My point was about affecting change. People do read these posts, and if we help potential buyers avoid the mistake of buying FCPX now (at least for NOW, I find it very difficult to argue that buying it isn’t a mistake, unless you’re just interesting in tinkering).
To those who suggest we should just switch to Premiere or Avid now, rather than complaining, do you really think we are incapable of doing both? Personally, I started migrating some of my projects to Premiere Pro last year, because my crystal ball told me something like this may happen. Plus the AE integration is great. Just because we accept the potential need to switch, does not mean that we shouldn’t abandon our efforts to force Apple to listen to us.
Though seemingly unlikely, I still secretly hope for a Windows 7-esque replacement to the FCP Vista.

I think the attitude of “If you don’t like it, just move on and stop complaining” is a load of crap. This forum is not just an exchange of dialog. It is a historical record of the attitudes of creative professionals surrounding an event. Perhaps the sheer number of angry posts is the perfect way to illustrate just how angry everybody is.
By that thinking, the protesters in Egypt should have stopped after day one. They had already made their position known, right? Everything else was just “rehashing” the same points. Now, FCPX may not be 1% as important as democracy in Egypt, but I refuse to dismiss the value of repeated passion and outrage. This is how awareness is built.
If there is outrage and passion, why should we censor ourselves because some of your are “tired of all the vitriol?” If you don’t like our rants, my response if that nobody is forcing you to read them.
I, for one, will continue to express my outrage at Apple’s giant blunder until the Cow tells me I can’t. The rest of you will have to deal.

“My mindset is, no matter what – I am going to make FCP X work for me. A mindset that some can’t seem to comprehend.”
I think the incomprehensible part is the “no matter what.” It would be foolish to mindlessly follow whatever Apple tells us to do, just because they are Apple. Most of the people who are complaining, are doing so because they have been fiercely loyal to Apple. They are/were fiercely loyal because Apple always handled things in a particular way, which many of us believe has changed in recent years. You can count me as one of those people.
As I read the market, there is a strong likelihood that neither FCP7 or FCPX will be the dominant editing software in the near future, at least not in the professional market. I believe Apple will continue to develop FCPX to have mass appeal, and have already turned their back on FCP7. They will not spend significant resources to make FCPX a high-end professional application (like FCP7, Premiere, and Avid). It is not close to that now, and it would cost quite a bit to get it there. There’s no real profit motive to do that.
Sean, I think the danger in your mindset is that you may be willing to live and die with FCPX, but as you mentioned, many are in great disagreement with you. The majority will drive the market in whatever direction they want, and it you stick with FCPX, you will start to lose relevancy in the market. Just ask anyone who exclusively hitched their horse to Fast, Media 100, or Amiga.

July 14, 2011 at 2:07 pm in reply to: Wall Street adjusts Apple’s earnings estimate higher[Mitch Ives] “It’s the iPad2 that’s driving the increase in revenues. Oh, hell now I’ve done it… that’ll resurrect the whole “FCPX was made for the iPad” thread again…”
Well, I think that’s the point. Their bread is no longer buttered with FCP, or even their keyboard-based computers any more. I think you can argue that their handheld devices have given Apple more success than any of their “computers,” even the Macintosh. So it only makes sense that the bulk of their R&D go to their biggest money-makers. FCP is probably more of a “hobby” to pull a Steve Jobs phrase from the past.
Of course, the follow-up question might be, “Why can’t they do both?” As large and liquid as the company is, expansion does seem like a legitimate option. Just look at Microsoft. I wonder if you WILL start to see massive expansion once they get their new spaceship…. I mean campus…..built.
As far as “resurrecting” the “FCPX is made for iPad” thread, don’t worry about that. It never died.
