[Lance Bachelder] “Seriously though – one of the most impressive demos of the day for me was Lightworks – the Assistant Editor/Editor workflow is more powerful than anything I’ve ever seen. Funky looking program but great for long form feature work.”
Yes. It was pretty cool. I haven’t seen the full demo, yet. I hope to tomorrow, but the five minutes I got to see looked great.

[Andrew Kimery] “[Richard Cardonna] “If Adobe becomes subscription only (as rumore) Then fcpx will gain thousands of adobe refugies. Including me”
Official comment from Adobe:
“We are not doing away with perpetual licenses. They will continue with CS7 and beyond.
But yes currently there is a bit of a marketing push towards Creative Cloud.”

“Yes. They are clearly pushing the benefits of cloud, but also are very clear that perpetual licenses will remain.

[Greg Andonian] “The updates you’re getting aren’t as significant as the ones they are now able to offer Cloud users though. “
Actually, they mentioned a couple of elements in Audition today that are available right now for Cloud users, that will not be available otherwise until the Next release.

[Craig Shields] “Those of you at the show, have you been impressed with Anywhere? It was one of the big things I was looking forward to seeing when I thought I was going. What are your thoughts?
“As I’ve been moving around, I’ve missed presentations about it thus far. The real push seems to be around Creative Cloud and CS Next, as they are temporarily calling it. I really haven’t been focused on it, so I haven’t asked about it. But I will tomorrow if I get a chance.

[Greg Andonian] “The big drawback that I see with the Cloud versions though, is the fact that they have to phone home each month to verify that you’ve made your payment on time. What happens if your internet connection is down at the time when it’s scheduled to do this check? Or what if you’re on a laptop in a remote area that doesn’t have internet access?”
They actually discussed that today. They supply a backdoor number that you can call to deal with issues ranging from Internet outage to a planned Internet disconnect of longer than 30 days. Basically, if there is an issue they want you to touch base with them, and they promise to be very flexible in terms of that 30 day ping. This was part of a presentation, btw, not a conversation, and was actually a bullet point on a slide titled Four Myths About Adobe Creative Cloud. FWIW.

[Robert d'Alexis] “[Chris Harlan] “I’ve watching Adobe presentations today. It’s pretty dang blow-away.”
Would you care to express yourself further? 🙂
“I will, but right now I’m pretty exhausted. Off the top of my head, the DNx support, the opening of project elements in other projects, Audition frequency splitters for 5.1 mix, advanced gain control. It just goes on and on. These guys have really worked this program. CS Next, as they seem to want to call it here, is really pretty impressive.
In other brief notes–I enjoyed my visit to Editshare. The Mac version of Lightworks should be coming in 3-4 weeks, and it looks really tight. It really is a beautiful alternative. Saw a terrific Mocha demo. Mary Poplin makes it look easy, and convinced me that I must have it. OWC has some interesting, fast, relatively inexpensive san storage. Relatively inexpensive for SAS RAIDs, that is. GoPro had a terrific both, with an excellent discount for attendees, and a bitchin’ looking 4K 3D demo that was achieved with the cost of two GoPros and a stereophonic separator that they will also market. So 4K 3D @ around 1K. Who’d a thunk it? They also had all kinds of drone rigs and fancy mini helicopters sporting GoPro mounts on display.
I’m enjoying myself immensely, but I am dog tired.

[Lance Bachelder] “By the way if you’ve never attended the AJA Tuesday Night Party you’re missing the best party at NAB – it’s a tough ticket but worth it. At the Marquee again this year.
“Dude, it was a pleasure meeting you IRL today.

[Greg Andonian] ” I think he was on to something…

[Erik Lindahl] “…and maybe a GUI from the 21st century? MC7 might be better in that regard compared to MC6 and I know I got the comment “would you seriously choose your editor based on it’s GUI?!” and my answer is to a degree yes.
“The GUI’s just fine. And its much more flexible than X in terms of being able to arrange it. Of course its not as entertaining, no animation to enjoy, but in terms of an editing tool it’s far more serviceable and useful.

[Michael Phillips] “The tape-based Universal Mastering is the other major difference that is tied to Avid hardware (don’t know why though from an I/O perspective). I am writing up a workflow where you can do file-based universal mastering with pitch correction with Media Composer – albeit a few more steps, it is files based which more and more of the deliverables seem to be. “
Yes, that’s what I meant by standards conversion. I suppose Universal Mastering is actually a slightly larger tent, but for me its about standards conversion, so that’s how I think about it.
[Michael Phillips] “The other difference in the software is advanced color correction comparatively speaking to Media Composer which one can argue should have been part of Media Composer by now – but that is open for debate. “
I don’t know. To be competitive with other programs, it seems to me that there is not any real argument, especially with resolve floating around the way it is.
[Michael Phillips] “It will be interesting to see if there is actually more control available other than existing Symphony color correction as an option to Media Composer – since in the end, that’s just a Symphony. Depends on the pricing for option, upgrades, and what happens to existing Symphony owners – what is their path/upgrade?”
Good question. I own a seat of both, so I’m quite curious about that.
[Michael Phillips] “There certainly has been rumblings by owners in the past that they paid more for upgrades when there was nothing new, specific to Symphony to justify the cost difference. So they have been paying for that advanced color correction many times over through the years.
“The main reason I’m still using 6 as opposed to 6.5.
[Michael Phillips] “The news will start rolling out in about 3.5 hours. I’ll be on a plane making my way to Las Vegas so I’ll get to the details after I check in.
“Yup, I’m packing up to drive over right now.
