You currently can’t open your Premiere Pro or After Effects Projects in other programs if you decide to move.The fundamental problem with the Cloud is that if you terminate, you cease to have access to some of your material that can only be opened in the program you no longer have access to.
“Yes, but you can easily get the access back. A lot of it probably depends on your need to go back to old material, as well. Mine isn’t that great. My preference would be to have a perpetual, but I most likely will not walk away from Adobe if they go all Cloud. I do think it might hinder Premiere’s adoption, however.

Promo folk being the exception, I expect. We’re pretty plugin driven. Especially transitions.

I go back and forth. It doesn’t feel right. But on the other hand, let’s say I go to Avid-land for a two year project, and have no real need to touch CS for that time, when I come back I can opt in to the suite for a month or a year and be right at the current version. I’ve got my old copy of 6 to do small things, and can get a single month in case of an emergency. Then, there are the cloud add-ons that I have yet to evaluate. So, I can’t say I’d love it, but I can’t say I’d hate it.

[David Powell] ” just took the test last saturday. You do not need to take a class. You do have to take the test from an authorized avid test center, and they will charge you around $150 to take the test. Its free if you pay for the cla$$ though.
“Apparently you were lucky. I finally got a reply back from Avid, and the answer is no class, no test. I don’t know of any other certification process that does that. Not Microsoft. Not Cisco. Not Apple. Not Adobe. Sadly, I think they are living in the past. They’re caught between who they were–with a lock on all teaching materials–and who they are now, with software-only versions of the NLE, and all of their teaching materials available on Amazon. They’re terrific on the iPad, btw. Hopefully they will bring their certification program in line with other large companies, or it will become, increasingly, nothing more than a gimmick. Email below.

Avid certification represents successful completion of the courses & exams delivered by an Avid Certified Instructor. In Layman’s terms you have to take the course.

When the next version of the products become available, you will automatically have access to the new versions. It’s hard to lose either way.
“Dennis, if I take the 29.99 a month upgrade offer to get Cloud, does that mean I no longer have a stand-alone copy of CS 6? Or do I have a Cloud membership AND my old copy of CS 6? Also, if I take the upgrade, does that mean I will be ineligible to upgrade to a stand-alone CS 7, when (or should I say if?) such a thing is released?

It is such a maddening, ineffectual metaphor. It’s about as useful as “buy low, sell high.” Other than pointing out that you should be taking the future into account, it is meaningless. Furthermore, its adoption by an army of motivational speakers has turned it into a caution label for me, which translates as “WARNING: BS contained within.”
