You are asking a very broad question with very little detail. What format/CODEC are you coming from? Did you come from a DSLR? An ARRI? Or is it stuff shot willy-nilly on someone’s phone? What’s the condition of your edited footage? Has a colorist done preliminary work? Have you color-corrected at all? What colorspace are your effects in? Are you converting frame rates to deliver? What CODEC are you delivering in? Or are you delivering on tape? You are not quite asking “which button do I push to drive a car or fly a plane,” but you’re close.
I don’t know where you are starting from. It actually MAY be as simple as adding a filter or two, but mostly it is not. Maybe you are already compliant. Maybe you just need to double check your black levels. Generally, the reason people are hired as finishers for broadcast is because it takes some skill. So, if you really want people to comment on what you are trying to do here, you need to give more specific information.

I don’t think I’ve ever had to transcode 4X4 with Alphas. So, you can’t do it? Or, you can, but it corrupts files? Or, you can, but you have to take five extra steps? “sh*t” doesn’t really explain much.

Pathetic? Do you mean an attached alpha on import? I don’t think I’ve had any problems masking with alphas on rewrapped ProRes material. So, how do you mean pathetic? And, is this experience with 6 or 7?
I’m not trying to be a JackA by asking all this, btw. I’m just trying to find out where the walls are. My experience with ProRes in Media Composer has been pretty good.

I think where most people who come from FCP get caught up on modes is while trimming. In FCP, many folk tend to trim on the timeline via mouse, almost never opening up FCP’s trim window. Used this way, FCP does not distinguish between modes, ala trim and source/record. With this approach, people tend to blob things onto the timeline and then sculpt with trimming, and the context-sensative cursor is probably the best around. It becomes a seamless work area.
In a similar vein, I’ve seen a lot of people come from Avid to work on FCP, who add a lot of needless steps, like generating black/slug everywhere, or complain about FCP’s substantially inferior trimming powers when they actually don’t understand some of the more effective ways to trim. I do believe, btw, that MC offers much better trimming capabilities, just not “substantially” better. And that’s the thing about FCP Legacy; it mimicked so many different NLEs that you could work with in the style you were accustomed to, without understanding that it represented a single approach. It was part Avid, Montage, D/Vision, Speed Razor, and could be operated from any of those disparate angles.

No problem. If you are going for the internal RAID option, do get yourself at least 7200rpm drives.

Sure. You can do that. I have an internal RAID as well. Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital. I’m not sure what’s hot these days, but match two or three and put them in. I DO like having external RAIDs, though.

No. You can’t use a thunderbolt drive on a Mac Pro. No if ands or buts. The adapter you bought will allow you to run a FW800 drive on a thunderbolt system, not vice-versa. Return it. Get yourself something like a GRAID with either a firewire 800/USB3 port or an eSATA/firewire 800 port. If FW800 is fast enough for you, just use that. If you need faster throughput, get yourself either an eSATA or USB3 adaptor from a place like OTW Computing, and have someone who knows what they are doing install it. No offense. Its simple enough, but you are mid-project, and this all seems relatively new to you.
