  • I’m not sure I understand what you’re looking for, but I don’t think you can achieve what you’re trying to do. It looks like your current animation is in 3d and I’m not sure how you duplicated a path in a shape layer and offset it in 3d space because that, as far as I know, it’s possible. That means you didn’t do what you think you did or I don’t understand what you meant. You’ll have to make new shape layers to create the other sides of the plank, but you won’t be able to match the bending you’ve got in that animation because shape layers can only bend in 2d.

  • How much free space do you have on your SSD? It’s possibly your graphics card as I’ve always heard recommendations for Nvidia, but I don’t really know enough about that. Lack of space on your SSD could be a problem. Do you have other drives on that computer?

What exactly are you wanting to learn? Specific features in Premiere and After Effects? Techniques or ideas to make you a better editor? For the latter and somewhat the former, practice is probably the best thing you can do.

[Tero Ahlfors] “AVCHD is the crappiest codec that should die”

That’s just, like, your opinion, man.

AVCHD is not the crappiest codec. You get about the same quality as MPEG2 at a fraction of the file size. And most of the time you can edit just fine with it. It’s basically the same as the h.264 mp4’s you get from dslr’s.

He says this on that same page.

[Arun Prasad] “The first part uses the hair render in C4D with transparency for the fall off.

For the second part I would just duplicate the path, and use a gradient stroke as a luma matte for the falloff.

I have no idea how to do either of those things. C4D I’m sure would just take some learning, but as far as I know, there is no such thing as a gradient stroke in After Effects. You could use the echo effect.

I’m not an all-star, but thanks.

As Kalle suggested, I’d start with trying something with fractal noise. Another thought would be to find a texture online of some blood smear or something similar and use it as a displacement map over the text. Maybe some fractal noise or masks to give it some more randomness or spotty-ness.

It could be an OS problem as Nat suggested. But I wonder if it’s your footage. In a multicam sequence, it might be trying to render all the video layers at the same time, that’s gonna take a lot of CPU power with AVCHD. Try converting your footage to something more edit friendly like a fairly high bitrate mpeg2 or DNxHD if you have that.

OK, yeah. In the tutorial, none of the manually created parts of the flare exist outside the layer, the masks are all within the boundaries of the layer, thus when they move the layer, you can’t see the edges. In your example, it looks like you made your masks bigger than the layers, or at least blurred beyond the edges. When you make your flare, make it small enough that all the parts fit on the screen, you can scale it up afterward.

[Michael Foster] “How often do people pull their hair out working with after effects?”

My office often looks like a hair dresser’s booth. We have someone who’s job it is to keep the floor swept.

For real though, After Effects (or any job in this field) is all about problem solving. Your ability to problem solve, often times googling or asking questions at places like the Cow, will determine how far you go with the program.

I’m not quite sure what those layers are doing, but I assume they’re moving when you move the point around. If the whole layer moves then the edge of the layer will be visible and that’s what you’re seeing. Again, I don’t know exactly how you have that set up, but it looks like you could try starting with layers much bigger, then when you move then, you wouldn’t see the edge of the layer until you moved it much farther. I assume there’s some way to move whatever you have on the layer instead of moving the layer itself but without understanding how everything works it’s impossible to say. If I could open your project, I might be able to figure it out. What tutorial did you watch to do this?
