Question about codec support for SpeedGrade. Does it read Sony XDCAM EX clips? Like Premiere in how it can use the native file structure from the BPAV folders? I flattened the mutlicam clips, exported and EDL, but the .mp4 files within the BPAV folders aren’t viewable or usable within SpeedGrade.
Looks like exporting image sequence is the only route when sending a Premiere sequence using XDCAM EX clips?

Thank you for the info!

Bret W: “Except the audio comes from the audio out of the SDI monitor so that it won’t be out of sync. Otherwise tb analog audio I always ahead of te HDMI OR SDI output.”
You bring up a good concern about sync sound. So, if audio passes through the SDI monitor to the mixer and then to the speakers, all will be in sync? Even with the HDMI monitor?
And I forgot to mention that this diagram was based from Walter Biscardi’s very helpful iMac blog post, but wanted to modify for our budget and workflow.
Thanks much

Yes as long as they are both not running concurrently, as far as I recall from my chat with Adobe tech support. The main thing for me was to be able to have the flexibility to work on my home office PC workstation and then when needed my Macbook.
From my experience this weekend, the Adobe tech support has been very prompt. You can get onto the Adobe site and initiate a chat with tech support to get official confirmation before buying.

I just went through the same thought process and ended up calculating that the yearly subscription is actually the same as buying an upgrade. CS 5.5 Prod Prem to CS6. So as far as an impact to the bank account and the return on investment, it was a good decision. Key in my mind were full access to all apps not just the Prod Premium suite. The big one for me is being able to install and run the apps on both my main PC workstation and my Macbook (not at the same time). That was a major limitation of the boxed installers–limited to one platform.

I am not sure if it still holds true today, but when I worked exclusively with FCP 7 I do recall having to install Sony drivers before being able to use the log & transfer tool with XDCAM EX footage.
Did a quick online search and found a 2006 Sony white paper on XDCAM workflow:
“Before you can successfully connect an XDCAM HD device to your Mac, you must install the Sony drivers and XDCAM Transfer software (PDZK-P1). The software can be downloaded at https://www.sony.com/xdcamhd.” -
Have only worked with XDCAM EX in Premiere and had few issues. BPAV could end up being the most efficient way since Premiere is set to handle Sony’s various cameras and codecs with ease. If you’re sending video files that were transcoded on a Mac then perhaps the client doesn’t have the appropriate codec installed, assuming the recipient in on a PC.

Curious if this could be related to the media cache files & database? Currently set to the default internal system drive. C:Users…AppData Roaming Adobe Common
There appears to be a correlation between some of the problem clips that import into ProTools and Audition (via OMF) as empty files, also showing in PrP with no waveform in sequence (but sound is heard).
While doing tests between PrP OMF exports and Audition imports I get error messages. On export:
Failure opening file:
\?C:Users\\AppData\Local\TempINTRO_~1And, error on import of OMF into Audition:
C:Users\\Documents\TestOMF_export\test\test_v1.omf
Warning: 58 of the 145 clips have no file asset. -
A quick follow up, we ended up siding with your latter recommendation due to tight schedule of the crew–had little time to render proxies. We ended up Fed-Ex-ing the SxS cards overnight. I was able to start cutting right away with Premiere. Ended up saving time, not having to relink from Proxy to Hi-res. Thank you for the advice

Thank you for the reply and insights. Can you tell me what is the recommended way to create the Proxies, and the time involved? I am not sure whether the producer or DP who will be travelling have done that workflow before. Would Proxy Mill be the best solution?
