Make sure to also check your tapes. Open the flap and make sure the tape doesnt have wrinkles, waves, or tears. Usually near the end of the tape is where you will want to check the tape physically. Dirty and damages tapes can effect the drum and of course dirty the heads. A tape cleaner is fine, it will get the surface and work a bit longer, but professional service every couple hundred hours is the way to go because full adjustments can be made to the unit as well.

IF YOU CAN GET TO A QUIET ENVIRONMENT, TURN ON THE CAMERA. DO IT A FEW TIMES, USE YOUR FUNCTIONS AS NORMAL. LISTEN CLOSEY FOR ANY PHYSICAL CLICKING COMING FROM THE UNIT. ITS USUALLY FROM THE INTERNAL LENS.

Are you still in the market for Canon? Also, if you can get the unit inspected and repaired and then SOLD, that would be another viable option for you.

[Kurt Raihn] “I have a Canon XL1 and noticed during video transfer from my last shoot some pixelation during camera movements and during lens movement. The problem is worse when the camera is moved more quickly. Anyone else ever experience this? I am not sure if the problem is with the camera, the lens, or a combination of both. I don’t have another lens to mount to eliminate that as a problem.”
It is NOT your lens. If the lens was giving you problems it would not be focusing. Pixilation occurs when the drum unit inside the deck is dirty or needs to be replaced. Pixilation is picked up from the record heads not the lens.
[Kurt Raihn] “Also, does anyone know of a reputable XL1 repair shop in California?”

What type of noise is it you are hearing? It could be anything from the deck to the lens itself or just might be loose ground. Since there is no internal Mic on these units, thats my 2 cents (without seeing it myself that is)
