  • Exact same situation here. This is something I have a desperate need for.

You might look at Adobe’s SpeedGrade as well. I’ve been playing with it, and it’s kinda cool. I’m not a colorist, so your mileage may vary. But Adobe is definitely pushing it as a professional grading application. And it comes included with a “cloud” subscription of $50/month.

It was really easy to export an EDL from Avid, then open that EDL in SpeedGrade and link it to the RedRaw files for grading. Took about 10 seconds to figure it out.

I assume you’re talking about the effect that is showing up fairly regularly now on just about every cable documentary and reality program where an element pulls out in front of the image and the background goes sort of soft?

To do this you’ll need to rotoscope the element that pulls out, and then do a slight scale on it, while simultaneously dropping the background slightly out of focus. You can do it directly in Avid using two layers, an Animatte, and a defocus effect. No extra software necessary.

    Vince,

How do you do that, exactly. I’m kinda new to PP, coming from Avid MC.

Yep, just started my first big project in PP CS6 and that was one of my first annoyances. Count me amongst the folks who want to turn it off!

Yeah, if we’d been using PCs we could have made THAT update ourselves ages ago. The fact that it took Apple Corporate to give us a processor upgrade is actually a reason I’m getting tired of this closed mentality. PCs here I come… again.

Although a slot in the keynote would go a long ways towards mitigating professionals’ concerns regarding Apples future direction…

I hear you. I’ve pretty much already decided to go PC when I’ve used up my current Mac Pro, but I love my 17″ MBP and will hate to lose that. Oh well, they’re just tools.

I’m betting that Apple did indeed plan on killing off the Mac Pro, but after the public relations shellacking they took over FCP X they reconsidered… Maybe they’ll now double down on the “pro” market to try and redeem themselves?

I’m drooling over that ProMax machine, and will be migrating BACK to Window’s once I’ve used up my current MacPro. The only reason I went Mac in the first place was to have a seat of FC7 in case somebody walked in the door and needed it, which only happened once in the past 4 years. Media Composer runs better on Windows anyway.
