You are using the parent pick-whip. You need to use the expression pick-whip. Check out this: https://library.creativecow.net/articles/rabinowitz_aharon/Exp_Tips_1/video-tutorial
From 1:20 to 1:25 is the all important pick-whip.

If you select the clip you applied this effect to, and press “U”, the keyframes that have been applied will be revealed. Then you can move them closer together to make the transition faster.

Roland is right. Using expressions makes this a cinch. Double up the timelines like you were doing, but instead of parenting the child-nulls to the master-null, alt-click the transform properties of the child nulls and pic-whip each of those to the master-nulls corresponding properties.

Also, “good-looking” is really subjective.

Obviously AE would be better to use than anything else you’ve mentioned. This needs to be motion tracked, contain animated garbage masks, and for best results, inverted luma key track matted to the original footage. Probably a simple light wrap to help tie in the background. All things that AE does well.

After Effects is compositing software, primarily. You would need to use a 3d program, like MAYA to achieve such an effect. (Or very incredibly steady actors and lots of props hanging from fishing wire)

A new computer would be necessary for the 64-bit only CS6 – and worth it to edit the much larger HD format as easily as you did with DV footage. Adobe has recommendations on computer components, and a great website that tests editing computers is : https://www.videoguys.com/Guide/C/DIY%2bSystems.aspx
As for the learning curve… well there will be one of course. Single track editing does differ from 2-track. But after a few projects you’ll begin to discover a work flow. There are lots of tutorials to be found online using PPro. -
Or in a more “dirty” way… if you aren’t so familiar with time-remapping, you could split the layer where the stops are to occur, and use the freeze-frame command.

All objects can be forced to always face the camera. It is called auto-orient, and I believe can be reached by right clicking the layer and choosing transform > orient.. something like that.
