Here’s what I love about the “Art” forum:
– Editors alone have a table to chat bigger picture stuff. This is regardless of platform or system.
– I ask real artistic questions, and get real artistic answers from people who appreciate the art form.
– Editors with knowledge of only Avids or FCP systems tend to steer down the same paths and it’s often refreshing to hear opinions from Premiere, Discreet, even Steenbeck folks. Here’s what I would wish for:
– Separate but equally respected “Art” forums for camera and for audio professionals. I would just love to hear the same level of chatter from those on the non-editorial side of the pasture.Shoot, sorry if I took it too far OT… In a nutshell: call the forum whatever you wish, but the workflow insights, vents and rants, insider shortcuts, and so on are all part of the “Art” we churn out every day. It feels good a few minutes per week to romp the meadow with other cows. I just hope the Discreet folks don’t lose out on tech help.

I’m thinking more Uriah heep. They had what… seventeen drummers? Heck, the Best Of album had a bar graph on it just to explain ’em all!
Seriously though – it sounds like very good idea. Any injection of fine wisedom is always welcome.
Although I wouldn’t recommend changing the “Art of” name. It probably keeps a lot of the chatter out concerning file formats and software upgrades.

[Chaz Shukat] “Let the material be your guide.”
Exactly. Also, follow the drama. Documentaries don’t just document life, they present it. Drama is the difference between watching a good documentary and scanning through a security video.

Michael P –
Sorry… you’ll need more info from me to answer that:
– final destination is to be 24 fps video for festival projection.
– possible funding may warrant transfer to 35mm film from master tape.
– DVD distribution will be small, but definite. Thanks!

[MichaelP] “The imaging and motion capture is done at 1/23.976th of a second with a 48th per second shutter (47.952) which is similar to a film camera at 24fps”
Aaah. Does that hold true with Panny Varicam footage as well? Specifically, 720p @ 24fps? If so, then I may have made an error today when I imported the location audio from hard drive. (An Avid prompt gave me the option to import audio at 30fps instead of 29.97 – which I took).

I agree 24p.com is a great resource. Checked it out – still confused on this question though.
Anyone?

Recently I’ve been getting away from the need to see everything as it comes in. I’ve jumped with both feet into the “scene card” process illustrated on page 140 in Murch’s “Behind the Seen” book. If I have the luxury of an assistant editor on the project, great! If not, the workflow is the same but I’m doing both jobs.
Here’s what it entails:
(workflow for a documentary – assumes that an associate producer logged the tapes with Avid Media Logger)
Assistant Editor does:
1.) Digitizing of all footage at 10:1.
2.) For A-ROLL, adding Avid locators for interview bytes and roomtone.
3.) For B-ROLL, adding Avid locators for useable environmental (or “nat”) sounds.
4.) Sub-clipping all interviewee answers, head-to-tail.
5.) Assembling the interview clips exactly as written in the script and exporting that as a QuickTime for the producer(s) to review.Editor does:
1.) Review the producer’s tape logs.
2.) Makes scene cards and organize them by location/interview.
3.) Go through footage and make selects. Organized them to coordinate with scene cards.
4.) Edit.Sure there’s a lot of steps not shown here, but you get the idea.
I’m now finding that being as hands-off as possible with the digitizing allows me to build an expectation of what I would want to see as an audience member. When I then begin examining the footage, it’s more from the mindset of a restaurant chef working with the food and resources at-hand to match the expectations of the customer.
It’s not a right or wrong, it’s just what is working for me… this week.
