…reminds me of a few chapters in Ralph Rosenblum’s book “When the Shooting Stops, the Cutting Begins: A Film Editor’s Story”. (A great book, by the way.) It looks at the editors that stood in the shadows of great directors such as Wells and Keaton, and questions where the director’s genious stopped and the editor’s began. Very interesting, because the director was the only one publicly writing the history.

    Btveditor – you’ll like this one…
Right now I’m editing a doc with old (1927) 35mm film footage in it. We sent the film footage to a post house to be dubbed to video. It came back on four tapes. The fourth for some reason was screwed up. The film footage had soft verticle lines on it and looked like it was shot off a TV. No way film shot almost 30 years before TV could have this. I called the post house and asked them to redo it. He said he didn’t need to and explained very politely that it was on the original. So of course I ripped him a new one – both over the phone and in person.

Then he very politely handed me his eyepiece magnifier and a strip of the original film. Needless to say, sometimes when I least expect it, I find my ego has ballooned into a Macy’s float, and for no apparent reason.

Also needless to say, because of the guy’s consistently calm pleasantries, I’m still a dedicated client of his.

[Alister Robbie] “For some reason, the colourists always seem to know the good info (gossip) about what projects are happening around town.”

Probably because they give a ton of estimates early-on during the budgeting process. Funny thing is once folks find out how much a good colorist costs, they give the color correction work to their online editor anyway.

Also, work with – and drink heavily with – other assistant editors. Seriously, no experience is better than insight from helpful peers. You’ll also build a small team of folks that’ll get each other gigs.

  • … or just put a mask on top & bottom, allowing you to move the image up or down under the mask. Yeah you’ll lose part of the vid, but the finished product will look a bit better (not squished or strtetched).

Does the scool matter? Sure. However I’d bet big $$ that a graduate with more years of non-production academia would sell him/herself better during the “hunt”.

A couple of the hardest working production folks I know are simply unaware of how to sell themselves into better positions, whereas a really green 25-year-old I met last year is now raking in almost six figures for the 5 (or so) months of work he does per year.

Not that I think it’s advisable to bluff with a 9-10 offsuit, but the rest of the straight might come down on the river.

…don’t remember how powerful the paint tool in Xpress is (or if it exists at all), but I use it all the time in Adrenaline. Drag it onto the clip, create the shape you want in the effects interface, then change the shape in the pulldown menu from “solid” to “blur”. It’s like a controlled way of putting vaseline on the lens.

    Depends on your delivery needs.

IE- When sending anything for broadcast to PBS National, we need full-sized D-Beta tape(s). Does that mean we need to own a deck? No. That’s what dub houses are for. HOWEVER, PBS is famously strict on their tech requirements and owning our own D-Beta deck has saved us countless times (we can do our own in-house digital tech checks).

Too often has the dub house’s proc been off and messed up good video levels.

Regarding quality though, when creating Avid “archive-to-videotape” masters (or any in-house masters for that matter), we ALWAYS use D-Beta. I don’t think anything out there offers 100% perfect 1:1 on-tape resolution, but D-Beta comes much closer than DVC-Pro, etc.

BIG DOWNSIDE: no HD capability as of yet.
