Side note – I’ve also seen this three display setup where the left display showing bins etc is mounted vertically. More for scripted and documentary users with ScriptSync and such.

Hello! Yes the three-display config is wonderful for Media Composer editing, and growing fast in popularity. Left display is bins and project stuff. Right display is timeline only. A third display is mounted above the right display and shows Composer window, color tools, etc. Very cool.

I have seen this done in the way you described. The only major issue you might run into is an Apple issue, not an Avid one. In Catalina… I think 10.15.6 if I remember correctly… Apple users in all industries not just media saw 2nd-display and 3rd-display issues introduced. (Some Apple users said it was only seen in a specific couple of video card configs, but I never saw that mentioned publicly.) It was still there in early BigSur versions too, much to everyone’s dismay. it affected iMacs, it affected older iMacs being used in Target Display Mode, as well as laptops.

As of BigSur 11.5.x series, I no longer hear anyone complaining about it so it must’ve been fixed or at least patched by Apple. Unsure. So if you get the gear, plug it all in, and discover something is not working, you might want to consider updating your OS. Just a heads-up.

    Hi Kevin.

Yes you can do that workflow either way.

Avid Media Composer really works best with transcoded material. Know that AMA was a workflow originally created so that DITs and Assistants could quickly look at their clips and decide which ones to import or transcode. While it “can” be used to edit with, doing so is not very performance-friendly.

If you’re looking to dive deeper into understanding the way Avid uses a computer for performance, general efficiencies, or to simply find out why things work smoother than others, check out this blog I wrote for them a few years ago. Although the versions I mentioned are outdated, the concepts are still very much the same.

Hi Guy. Pat is correct that 11.6.0 is causing quite a bit of issues. Not sure if that’s the exact cause of the issue you’re having, but I’m glad you’ve found a workaround.

    Hi Trevor.

Don’t upgrade yet. The most current version of the macOS is BigSur 11.6.0 and the highest version o Avid MC currently runs only on macOS 11.5.2 which you cannot get right now. I’ve been seeing lots of issues with BigSur 11.6.

That being said… Your MC7 app will not work at all on Catalina or Big Sur. You would need to either buy a new perpetual license, or get a subscription.

For reference, go to a website I’ve created to understand all of the Avid version environments: http://www.alwaysediting.com/avid-mc-versions.html
