Implemented PCIe is just about 1 year old isn’t it?

Is there even anything on the horizon to replace it?

It has so much more potential than any other bus architecture.
I think it will be around for many years to come.

  • I would Stick to HDV.

    Why make it more complicated?

I’ve done a long form and it worked out just fine.

though the deliverable was an SD DVD.

yep AE or Shake is what I was going to say.

When Final Cut Extreme (whatever the realtime FCP on steroids is that apple is working on) comes out. Autodesk/Discreet will have a serious wake up call to deal with.

We own a smoke* (3.6.1 on SGI Octane) and I must say I have NEVER understood how someone could say a smoke is so much better to edit than anything ever made before (smoke editors words not mine) The way it is different than most all other editing systems out there….I can’t stand it. I don’t see how anyone could stay organized working that way with clips all over the desktop.

    But thats just me. 🙂

THANK GOD, we purchased FCP 5 this year on a quad G5 system and 1.2 TB array.

Everybody loves working on this system and the smoke* barely gets used anymore.

The smoke* was a great system when we bought it new for $ 250k some time ago. It could do all kinds of stuff that seemed really fast at the time that no other system could.

  • I believe the lack of hardware overlay on the decklink is
    what causes that.

same reason you have no gui accelaration on the decklink extended desktop.

    Digibeta decks are 10-bit.

Can you not simply render a 10-bit file out of ae and import it into avid or fcp?

    thats what I do.

  • would you share what you did to make it work?

I have the dell 24″ as well (good choice btw!) and I want
to see HD on it and hardware downconverted SD on our
    sony sdi crt monitor.

the notes i have from kristian are:

Turn on hardware down conversion and use the SDI B output to connect to the SD monitor. This way, you can monitor SD via SDI and HD via DVI.

I did this, but all i see is pink snow on the sd monitor.

    How did you do it?

can you do it in hardware mode?

I’ve found the software downconvert not very good and pretty much useless for any production.
