How did you down convert the footage? I always use the deck to downconvert the HD to SD. Software downconversions never look good in my opinion.

The footage is al shot on RED, and converted to Pro Res HQ 1080p 23.98fps.

Varicam always records at 60p. When you shoot any speed other than 60, the camera records redundant frames to make 60p. There is no way to revert.
Typically, when you shoot 24, the redundant frames are removed in when the footage is ingested into the NLE.

Welcome to the great race to the bottom. First rates, now the HDX-900 is having a negative effect on Varicam business. Had a PM from a cable network that did not understand that any Panasonic DVCPRO HD deck will convert 720 to 1080. Lost a 2 day rental. Producer insisted on HDX-900s shooting 1080.

Did you try checking the box in FCP to remove advanced pulldown?

Sounds like dirty heads on your playback deck. Have it checked by a tech, and cleaned.

Unfortunately not possible. When you shoot 24p with the Varicam, it creates a 2-3 type pulldown to make 60p. So even though the camera’s VTR is recording 60p, you are not shooting 60 frames a second…. only 24.
This is the same for any frame rate under 60. The camera creates duplicate frames to make 60.
