In all of my fourteen-fifteen years of shooting this has never happened! I feel horrible, ashamed, embaressed, pissed and so unprofessional. I have lost many nights of sleep over this and am wondering what I’m going to tell the woman whos daughter Bat Mitzvah is now gone. This week was horrible to begin with and just progressivly worse. The only good thing that came out of it was Peters suggestion for a tripod which I followed.

I will always recommend Keith at TriVision!! Phenominal service and cheaper prices than B&H! Who woulda thought? Most people always assume B&H has the cheapest prices but as I found out it wasn’t the case. After setting up the Vision3 I can’t see how I got by for so many years with a cheapy tripod. For those out there looking to buy a tripod and have a very tight budget….wait and save those pennies!!!! Buying an upper level tripod is night and day. Seriously, the smoothness(I could go on about this), having the counter balance and build quality are unmatched(except maybe for those tripods that cost 10,000).

    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Sam,
Yes the price diference is huge and I have my own stories of bad customer service. Its funny how you point out that Apple pointed fingers at others but I had the same experience with Avid. It just seems, after trying out the new FCP, Motion and Shake, that you get more bang for the buck from Apple plus the fact all my Particle Illusion files and Boris Red files and both programs work the same for FCP with the whole switch over. While the thought that we may be looked at as a lower production company has crossed my mind I look around at the work that is being done on FCP and am more impressed every day. What to do What to do…..

Thanks for your help! After much thought we eeked out enough to buy the Vinten PRO-10-DV which supports 22lbs for the DSR570. While we would have liked to buy the Vision3 we needed the extra 300 for bills. So now we’ll see what sort of difference there is! Of course it will be night and day over the Bogen with the 501 head!!

  • I too am dealing with this and the same questions. What will we viewed as, a low end production house? Will our productivity fall? And so many more questions. I can see the answer being yes to both a number of years ago with older versions of FCP but now? Nine years ago in college we used Media100 and early versions of FCP and could see why everyone went with Avid. After trying FCP with Motion, Shake and other software I’m beginning to wonder if upgrading to another Avid is worth it. We have used Avid for the past four years and have thought of switching over or upgrading……of course if we had the money we could do both : )

A few hundred more?!?! Hmmm from what I see about 500-700 dollars more. I would love a Miller but budget prevails. Don’t they all pan and tilt or are you talking about the quality and smoothness of these features. We had a Bogen 501 head before and didn’t like it at all…

Looks like either a Libec or another Bogen at this price point. Which is better??

Maybe I should be asking ‘Which is good for what?’ A liitle background first; While at Emerson learned on Media100 and early version of FCP, while interning I got to learn some on Avid. I have worked on small films, commercials, corporate vid, weddings, events, pretty much the whole guantlet. When we started we actually had the Sony ES3 for a short time before switching to Avid. What we have been working on are dance studios, weddings and such but we are TRYING to move away from these and into corporate video, commercials, events, music videos etc, etc. I had too much fun doing these types of projects but when we started we needed some source of income. So now that you all know where we would like to go, which system? Should we save for a trade in with Avid or go FCP?

I’ll completely agree with you Charlie. In the beginning we tried to be as nice as possible but it was always “the other companies fault”. Compaq however always tried to help us out even though the XPress wasn’t thier software product including having tech guys out here and they even replaced our workstation for a xw8000 now thats service! I will say that they did replace the Avid cards. Whatever it was it seems all the bugs have been worked out and things are running smoothly.

    Grin,
You siad it perfectly in your first sentence! Going to school in the 90’s Avid was IT. A production house wasn’t a production house unless it had Avid, you weren’t an editor if you didn’t edit on Avid. So when we started our own company it had to be Avid, problem was we could only afford the XPress which even four years ago was 28500.00. While it has had its ups and downs the system is fairly solid but it does have its limitations and IMO they are really starting to show with some of the new, cheaper systems out there. For the price of a trade in at Avid we can get a FCP system which does a hell of a lot more and still have money left over. So now I think we will be switching to FCP and I cross my fingers that we are making the right choice. BTW Grin I saw your reel and was reely impressed! What did you use for the effects and what system do you have?
