I guess I’m used to Avid drives which are faster and Avid always seemed to pound it into you that 7200 was unacceptable.

At the moment with the avid I have 4 Ultra 160/LVD rS73’s stacked up. Good drives but they were pricey at the time, around 1200 a piece but now there are so many options it akes my head spin. But as I said before it looks like CalDigital makes a good solution.

Thanks for the info! I know from reading Sonnet is well recieved but now I’m reading about CalDigital which seems to have good solutions. And boy have I/O boxes been reduced in size. The Avid I/O box is big and clunky. I’m liking that new I/O HD box that AJA has coming out in July. I really need to catch up on technology although I think these days its nearly impossible.

Considering the X Serve is so expensive what are some recommended solutions? Lacie, some other company?

Ok that makes sense. Considering I’m old school with SD I’m looking at “future proofing” myself. So I know the differences between 720, 1080i, 1080p, etc. but what is the difference between HDV, DVCProHD and just HD that warrents different drives?? I’m looking at the Panasonic HDX500 because it can shoot both SD and HD but I’m concerned with what type of hard drives I’ll need.

3 years 2 mother boards, 3 replacement Avid Ultra 160 drives and the Avid cards have now been replaced twice each. If it wasn’t under warranty it would have cost us a fortune. Speaking of fortune Avid’s warrenty costs a fortune for one year where as to get everything covered for three years including the Xserve drives is reletively inexpensive.

Editors and prod houses each have there own experiences with different editing systems, some good and some bad. My own experience with the “king” of editing is not a particulary good one as our system can crash hardcore at any given time. According to some friends who own there own prod house in LA Avids are notorious for being stable to a point but when they crash they crash bad. I have also notices job offers for Avid techs, NOT editors but people who just maintain Avids, I don’t see this with other editing systems. So I hope it will be soon as dealing with avid is a constant headache.

Kinda funny as I did have an older Palm which the batteries didn’t last at all. I figured the new ones would be better but from what I have been reading they don’t last at all. I’m afraid I have read quite a few on the Tungston E with the same problem. Well I guess its back to paper and XCel.

I agree with all of the above! Equipment can help but overall its the experience, it pays to learn some from the pros, seminars, classes etc. FCP is definately a good choice for the price. You can do numerous searches to find good used PD-150’s, DSR 300’s or even bargains on DSR390’s. If you junt around enough deals can be had and neccessarily from B&H. If in fact you do enough of these shoots so your not renting you need a good tripod, especially when it comes to a DSR300 and up. Consider the Vinten Vision3 which is far superior than any of the others that cost under a grand (buy it from Keith at TriVision in L.A.). Ok thats my plug for Keith for today as he helped us out yet again bigtime for this weekend!
