If it’s 1080i SP, it’s the same as HDV, and Compressor has a setting for that. If it’s HQ, then you’re out of luck.

VLC player (free download) will play the files on both Windows and Mac machines. No XDCAM-EX codec required.

There actually has been a focus issue with some of these cameras. A friend of mine got Sony to replace his lens at no charge. It took some doing, but they eventually caved-in. In fact, i think it was out of warrenty.

Thanks Chris. Makes perfect sense. It’s a Lacie D2. Beautiful enclosure. I’d like to put it to better use. I’d forgotten about the difference between ATA (IDE) and SATA. Too bad. Technological advances are wonderful, but we pay for it with the obsolescence of our old gear.

  • In addition to this, move your subject as far from the background as possible.

  • My preference is to edit in the native codec, but set the render codec to ProRes. That way, there will be no conforming until the final output, your rendering will be much faster, and your graphics and color grading will have the benefit of the ProRes codec. It’s really the best of both worlds.

    No.
The component connections on the EX-1 are for output only. You can record the programs to your computer, if you have an HD capture card with component in. HDMI will not work do to copy protection on the HD broadcasts.

I use M2t instead of H.264 with fairly high bit-rates (25-30 mbps). When I first got my WDTV, I did some experimenting with H.264 files, and for some reason, the player wouldn’t give me audio, so I gave up and went with M2t, which has worked great ever since.

Well, to start with, I’m doing the compression in Compressor, and using MPeg2 rather than H.264. Then I take it into Toast, and make sure the settings in Toast match my source, otherwise, it will try to re-compress.
