Easiest for them perhaps. More trouble for you, and an inferior end product.

I’ve never had an issue with editing AVI / DV files in FCP. The program will usually give me a warning (non-optimized file), but there doesn’t seem to be any problem. If it were up to me, I would take the AVIs over the DVDs.

How are you controlling the deck? Firewire? If so, you can only do assemble edits.

I also have the rig that Philip Bloom reviewed, and I’m very pleased. I agree with Michael about the “Breathing” aspect, but it’s a nice, solid, lightweight and not cumbersome option. I bought the same unit from a dealer on E-Bay for about $70. It has a different name (Sonia), but it’s the identical unit.

Was your board feed wired or wireless? If you have one direct, wired feed and one wireless, there will be a slight delay between the two, depending on the distance between the transmitter and receiver. OR….your speaker mike is picking up more room sound which is resulting in more echo effect.

I use an 1800 on my EX-1. Love it!
Lots of light, even with the tunksten filter.

It’s not 16×9 which is kind of a bummer.

  • I’ll just add that, since you have under an hour’s worth of footage, it isn’t necessary to use 2-pass variable (Best Quality) encoding. Just choose single-pass encoding and choose a bit-rate of 7.5. You’ll save a lot of time and have a result that looks at least as good. Be sure to choose Dolby audio as well.

    Gary,

Will you get faster burns with a Firewire enclosure?

I have the external drive from Videoguys. It uses the Pioneer BD-203 drive. The Pioneer unit is great and I understand that there is a newer and faster model available now. The enclosure is USB2, so I’m wondering if I could get faster burns with a Firewire 800 enclosure. Currently, it burns at somewhere between 1x and 2x, although the drive is capable of 4x. I’m assuming that with an internal SATA connection, you could realize the full speed potential of the drive.
