What model (FS) do you use? I see the FS-C has been discontinued and they now have the FS-CV. I’d need to record HDV… will use tape simultaneously as a backup.

Hi again Stace:
Yeah it does but not sure if it will output simultaneously if firewire is connected. I may be wrong but I think the XH-A1 senses a connection for output and once designated…that’s all it outputs…
Plus the client has a Jones for firewire…and that’s what he wants for streaming. If the FS can daisy-chain the A/V…that would solve the problem… don’t know if I can split the FW output. Thanks again,

Thanks Stace:
I’m looking at different options, Firestore, Citidisk, Datacom. Ditto on the unsecure firewire connect…. still don’t know why the manufacturers don’t have a better connection like a click-release or something… gaff tape is a solution. Also… planning on using Sony Vegas for editing on site, client will be using FCP. So I’m guessing files will be compatible with either / both.
BTW….does the Firestore allow you to “Daisy-chain” the A/V signal to be output to a switcher while recording live? I’ve got a request to feed the A/V signal for live webstreaming.
Thanks again,

Well I found a “solution” at Fry’s. Went to the computer adapter aisle and found an RGB to DVI interface. Worked fine. However the A/V coordinator had another projector that took component out which worked fine.
Thanks for the tips.

I’ve used the Coles lip microphone and agree it is a great noise cancelling microphone as it is really obvious when you’re announcing from a loud area like a sports colesium, racetrack or helicopter. But keep in mind that the Cole has a very flat frequency response and may not give you the sound you’d expect in a studio mic. If noise abatement is your number #1 concern, the Coles lip mic is good and it’ll set you back about $650 +/- . I think there’s only one distributor here in the states that carries it.
What you might want to consider is make a table-top soundbooth. Get a large box or plastic storage bin, glue some acoustic foam around the interior, glue an LED light in the top, lean your copy in the back and set your mic in the middle on a short stand. Heck, you could just clip on a lav and lean into it. I’ve done this type of set up for office recordings, hotel rooms, anywhere I can close the door and get away from white noise like A/C vents, etc.
And don’t laugh but one of the best utility mics I’ve used is the EV 635a as it has a good response and tight pattern and can be picked up for about $100 or so if you look around. Test out what you have and see what works best. ( A closet with lots of clothing works well too!)

OKAY…HERE’S MY SOLUTION: After reading other past-postings of others who’ve experienced my Quicktime in Sony Vegas issues, I centered on comments made by those in the know that past issues were because of not installing all the tools or items (plug-in, etc.) that would make the QT work in Vegas.
Problem is that with the “free” QT 7.6 player download, there wasn’t an option to “Custom Install” the software. So here’s what I did: I uninstalled the latest version of QT and search online for an older (semi-recent) version. Found Quicktime 6.5.2 player download. After downloading to a hard drive, I ran the installation but noticed I had a “CUSTOM” install feature. I selected custom and selected “ALL”.
Presto….everything works! I imported the QT .mov into Vegas 6.0 and rendered it out as a .mov as a test. No probs.
So it worked. I’m wondering if I did an “UPDATE” on the QT 6.5.2 to the latest QT 7.6, would everything still work? Dunno… I’m going to wait until after I finish this project and perhaps give it a go.
Whew…. what a hassle.
