Followup – success!
OK, here’s what I have learned….
1.MUST use a second gen disk (Not the PFD23, but the PFD23″A” disk which says “2.4x” on it). I presume the 50GB disks will work but I don’t have any to test.
2.The deck, for some strange reason, will not accept less than a 3 sec. preroll from Digital Cut.

I’ll just chime in here with my recent experiences re: FCP2 upgrade. After performing an upgrade on three nearly identical systems (Dual 2.7GHz G5, 4GB DDR SDRAM, Nvidia 5200 or ATI? card, Kona2) we have begun to experience random crashing of FCP to desktop with the error message “FCP unexpectedly quit…” No hardware changes were made during the upgrades.
Calls to my local support engineer indicate there may be general stability issues – expect patches in Septemeber for IBC. I’ve also done a “Send Feedback” to Apple regarding our issues and recommend anyone else experiencing different behavior after the upgrade to do the same. FCP v 6.0.1, OSX v.10.4.10, QT v.7.2
