The JVC engineer in New Jersey said this is the product with the codec that is needed to playback HD QT files in Windows:

    Well, so far no luck.

I’m confident I correctly downloaded the codec that Mark recommended, and still don’t get video.

    Hmmmmm.

  • I’ve shot two 700s with the time code on each zeroed to 01:00:00:00 and set to “Free.”

When a cam stops recording and is restarted it will be at the same TC as the other cam which kept running.

This has worked fine in FCP in “Make Multi-Clip.” While the project was a five minute demonstration all I did was “cut” between the two levels of video like live switching.

I know that .mov clip files are limited, and don’t know how it would work with your hour+ project and numerous clips. I’m wondering if the TC would get you past the “orphans.”

I hope someone out there has a “Eureka!” moment, and comes up with the “Silver Bullet.”

  • Are you running time code in the “Run” mode on each of the two cams?

Each clip might then have a common reference point.

    Hope this helps.

    Bob,

I don’t know anything about Media100, and have never been in a shop that’s used it.

When we bought the 700s I suggested that we graduate to a Digital Asset Management system for storing raw footage and projects. So far there is no progress on D.A.M.

We have a department server with common folders where we store by subject or client finished programs, digital pix, etc. This works well as anyone can find anything. (Although there is no formal directory or library search capability.) As much as I want a searchable database, this works for us.

I transfer raw footage from the 700 by Firewire to a 500gb LaCie hard drive. I then transfer the clips I want (Quicktime files) to Final Cut Pro.

In-progress FCP projects are saved to the LaCie as well as “my” 320gb Western Digital HD.

    I hope this helps.

I welcome advice that can improve this process.

    Bob,

I completely agree with Jon. We have had our two 700’s nearly a year and each is flawless.

Not knowing your application, it’s a reliable cam with a pro feel and the SDHC cards with FCP make life easier than tape.

March 29, 2010 at 8:17 pm in reply to: b+3 setting displayed

    Folks,

Yup, that’s right, pressing User 2 activates Black Level 3. BL 3 is the default setting when User 2 is pressed.

I’ve learned to be diligent while handling the camera as it’s very easy to accidentally press Record or Focus Assist. I’ve also learned to check the viewfinder/LCD Panel between setups as it’s also easy to inadvertently switch the Gain or White Balance switches.

Duane Kersey, JVC Engineer in New Jersey, explained one might want to adjust black levels if shooting black tuxedos against a dark background. By changing the Black Level one can add definition between the tuxes and BG.

    Thanks everyone,

Thanks very much Dave, and I agree, concur, and know exactly what you mean by them basics!

I will proceed and persevere to learn as much as possible ASAP.

    Hi Isaac,

The speed of the Fujinon lens is f1.4.

I have no experience with the (stock?) Canon lens for the JVC-700. I was told that our two cams were equipped with Fujinon lenses as part of the deal since we were the first to buy them in this area. (One cam is off the original production line; the other cam is off a subsequent line and did not need the firmware update.) I think the lens lists for about $2,5K

Compared to the stock Fujinon lens on the old workhorse JVC-100 the new Fujinon lens is a remarkable improvement.

I’ve read differing opinions on the Canon VS Fujinon lenses and I believe it depends on budget and application. Will B&H let you see the lenses in a cam shootout or anything like that? Who’s out there that has further opinions based on usage?

    I hope this helps.
