Sync-N-Link X outselling Sync-N-Link says Intelligent Assistance[Walter Soyka] “I wouldn’t say that Mr. Hodgetts has an agenda so much as he has a vision: intelligent use of metadata makes post-production better. He’s been building tools around this idea for years, and he’s identified FCPX as the best and most natural fit around the kinds of workflows he’s been preaching since before they were practical.
He and Greg Clarke are a couple of seriously brilliant people, and their work is making FCPX better.
Personally, I am glad to see people passionate about their tools and I hope to see them profit handsomely from their efforts to make great products that people want to use.”
Yep. Not only brilliant, but incredibly responsive to end users. Philips e-book, “Conquering the metadata foundations of Final Cut Pro X” is a great read. It’s $5 though. The horror. :-0

April 4, 2013 at 3:31 am in reply to: FCPX at the tipping point? Sync-N-Link X outselling Sync-N-Link says Intelligent AssistanceI think everyone who’s plugging *any* NLE has an agenda. There are people who like X and they say so. There are people who like Pr or MC and they say so. There are a ton of people who are very mad at mean old Apple for EOL’ing Classic, so their comments are driven to some extent by that agenda. Oddly, I don’t read a lot of posts from X supporters, here or anywhere else, bashing other NLE’s. I’m sure there probably are some, but most of the bashing is coming in the other direction. This thread is a perfect example. Craig posted a link to an article positing a *possible* positive sign for os X. It took um… one post to sh*t on it. Now it’s time to pile on right?
I really like X, so I say so. I acknowledge it’s shortcomings as I see them. And while I might bring up things I don’t like about other NLE’s, I don’t need to piss all over them when I do that. It’s really sort of pointless. I think Philip is just reporting what he sees. Does he have an ulterior motive? Maybe. So what.

April 3, 2013 at 2:14 am in reply to: need advice – use audition for versioning or create 18 separate projects?[James Cude] “You can easily put all of that into one timeline and simply disable the identifiers you don’t need as you go to export each version. Select a clip and then V to disable/enable it. You can also select multiple clips for this operation.”
I concur. Stack them up. Select them all, hit V. Select the first one you need, hit V and export. Disable clip 1 enable clip 2 etc and repeat… 🙂

[Craig Seeman] “It was so much more reliable in the old days when you’d just wrap up the dub and UPS or FedEx would lose the package for you… Or the client wasn’t there to get the package and had to wait an extra day to get it.
All time best story was when a shipper lost a 1″ master which had to be rush shipped without a protection… and have it show up in the office 4 years later with a shipping label from Tokyo… this was a New York to New Jersey package!”
Nice. lol Yeah, while we still use them, waiting for messengers isn’t fun. The problem is we depend on the “tubes’ so much now and there’s the expectation that things just happen instantly. It’s the norm now. So when it doesn’t, havoc ensues. True for editing as well. Adding a couple dissolves when you’re cutting on film used to take a day or more. Now? you’re expected to do a complex multilayer matted green screen composite animated rotoscope shot in about 2 minutes. Which, of course, you can. 😉 I guess what I’m saying, is that I am old. 🙂

[Joseph W. Bourke] “Have you tried SoShare? It’s found at SoShareIt.com, and it lets you send up to a TB for free. You create an account – free – then you just email the link to the receiving party. I’ve used it on several large projects recently, and it works like a charm!
“Heard of them, but no. This problem is with the senders service, though I use yousendit on occasion We actually use Interdubs for our client approval and general transfer service, as we need the security features. They are, in a word, awesome. Not free, but waaaay cheaper than WireDrive, Beam and other similar services. Thanks for the heads up though.

LOL.. Yes, it is!

Fortunately this isn’t a “have to get it on air now!” deadline, but it still sucks. Oh well…

[John Davidson] “Aigh! I just did a test upload and the upload works – just the download fails. That’s totally not scary. At least FTP still works.
Stupid interwebs!”
Yep. I can see that the file is there, I just can’t get it. And the best part is that the narrator basically hit send, put on his coat, and is driving somewhere and can’t just email it or something. Wheee. I can’t wait for the “Our activation server is down. Please wait an indeterminate amount of time while we try to fix it” message when I fire up my shiny new cloud activated NLE. You know, the one I will never in a million years use.

[Rafael Amador] “When a newcomer comes to FC Forum asking how to share a project his his friend in Alaska, you can explain the process in two lines.
The solutions are workaround you are proposing are not OK for video editors.”You might want to read a bit further in the thread. But here’s how to share an X project with your friend in Alaska:
1-get all the media to them, or ensure they have the same media as you do (just like any other NLE requires)
2-Duplicate your Event and Project and give them the copies. They put them in the proper directories, open FCPX, and edit. Maybe some relinking is involved, but this is also common to other NLE”s as well right?
2A-they perform steps 1&2 to get it back to you. Not that difficult really… 🙂
Even easier if you have all your media local in the Event folder. 1-Copy your Event and Project. 2 Get it to Alaska. 🙂
