I have used linear keying in the past to match the background to the white your graphics contain. By replacing your white background with a matching white of the graphics and doing it linear, the impression is that the entire background is the same white. Try it I think you’ll like it.

I can’t truthfully say I have always known why a cut was bad, I jut felt it was bad, and went with that feeling and made changes tio it no longer felt bad.

I have always said if I ever felt 100% happy with something and didn’t feel it could be better, my standards of quality had diminished. Time to do something else. There is always somthing that could have made it better. Remember, perfection is only a goal, it can never be reached. You will eat yourself apart after a project if you keep thinking about it. Take the thoughts and spend a little time thinking about what could have made it beter, then send those thoughts to the back of your mind for future reference, but don’t tear yourself apart fretting about it.

First we have to decide what the other side is, probably not so far as you might think. What did I do? I studied others, saw what they did that I liked, what they did I didn’t like, formed my own style from all of those combinations. Training? Education? I’m a high school graduate. I learned from working with some exceptional, albeit totally unknown people. I watched everything they did, how they did it, and how they used teh people around them to get the best qualities of each person to form a team. Use other peoples brains, pick them apart, find out what makes them tick and how you can utilize that knowledge.
I have probably not made a lot of sense to what you are asking, but I feel very passionate about my feelings, and think purely by your quest for knowledge and asking, you will too.

Oh, don’t misunderstand. This was not at a reduced rate, just reduced time frame. Believe me they paid dearly for that rougly 180 hours in 9 days.Charlie

Once he walks out of your facility with his original material, your drives belong to you, as a point, I would probably keep the material (If I had the room to do so) for a day or so jsut to be sure he wasn’t going to come back and say what if I pay you for what was done? BUT…I would not ever put any faith on him doing that, if he should, you could always tell him, lucky for you I haven’t had time to wipe my drives yet. When he walks out of the door with his material and having not paid you, you are in your rights to wipe everything.

Releasing any work at all that has not been paid for, regardless of the reason, is bad business practice. If they are taking the project elsewhere, they either pay for what has been done, or start over at the new facility. They should not expect to get the work that was finished, at no cost whatsoever. If they refuse to pay, they don’t get any work. If any tapes belonged to them before the work began then release those tapes to them, but nothing that you created.

The closest thing I can think of that might work, is the NewTek Tricaster. Know very little about it, other than it is probably the new generation Toaster, and supposedly works with networking, unlike the original toaster. Just find Newtek on the net to get information.

After a 6 month futile attempt at a post facility in Los Angeles (I won’t give the name). The inauguration of George Herbert Walker Bush (The 200th anniversary of the first Inauguration) was brought to me. I was told, “You have 9 days to do this project.
[Shane Ross] “then they are going to get some new kid just starting out (or editor desperate for work) and they are going to get crud. Fast, Cheap, Good. Pick two.”
I am not a new kid on the block. I was not at that time desperate for work. I just plain love a challenge. Nine twenty hour days later we delivered a finished product to the congress of the USA, and they bought it.
I would send daily edited sections upstairs where we had created a sound scoring room just for this project.
Now I must admit it’s been a few years, and there is no way I would attempt that again. Most of my work at that time was created in weeks or months, and I am talking 30 second and 60 second commercials not 1 hour documentaries. But just as a point of reference, an experienced driven editor can create art in a small amount of time if confronted with that type deadline and he is challenged enough to do it.
Just thought I’d add that. As to sample reels, after 43 years in the business, I never had to use one, so I feel for the guys of today that depend on their sample reels for their livelihood.

Be sure the tape is in the machine, and inside video, before giving it a name. so it can sample the time code. This is the easiest way to not have the problem for me.
