Does a .DV source not work automatically with Premiere Pro? I thought that it would, but then again it has been a while since I looked at Premiere. If Premiere doesn’t accept .dv files, then it would definitely be best to convert to .mov or .avi (keeping it in DV Codec) first rather than MPEG-2. No point in recompressing an already compressed source before editing.

The problem with QT Pro is that it only supports the Uncompressed RGB color space and QT 2.0 codecs. Obviously, the AVI format has been hacked to support much more than that in recent years.

Technically, that is a question for Sorenson to answer. All I can tell you is that if you were to encode the same source with as comparable settings as you can get between the two apps, the one encoded by MainConcept would look better almost 100% of the time. And this has nothing to do with deinterlacing, this is just a subjective comment from the core encoding capabilities of each.

As it seems you have already discovered, Squeeze is not a good app for deinterlacing or for MPEG-1 (or MPEG-2 for that matter) encoding. I really do think your issues could be solved with either Compression Master (very good MPEG-1) or MainConcept (if you look at my many previous posts, you will see that Squeeze does license the Mainconcept encoder in their app but does a terrible job implementing it).

What kind of AVI are you looking to make? Compressed or Uncompressed? The best options for AVI creation are Canopus ProCoder and VirtualDub.

For MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC, H.264 and compatible with iPod), I would use Compressor. A good two pass encode shouldn’t require more than 400-600kbits, especially if scaling from 720×480 to 320×240 and deinterlacing. For MPEG-4 Part 2 (QT6 and compatible with iPod and PSP), I would recommend Compression Master. Using CM, I never need to go above 800-1000kbits at 368×208.

  • Personally, I don’t like deinterlacing for DVD. It can look really soft on a SD NTSC TV, and a good DVD player can do a good job deinterlacing by itself when it projects to a fixed pixel display, like LCD or Plasma.

  • Assuming you want to do this on the cheap compared to a DR solution, the Mainconcept Encoder can take in a DV stream and encode it directly to MPEG-1. (So can Squeeze for that matter, but quality won’t be as good.) With the MC encoder app, you could use an ADS Pyro A/V Link box (component, s-video, composite ins) and encode all your sources to MPEG-1 in RT. As well, you could do the same for WM9 with the free Windows Media Encoder app on the PC.

Looks like it was an issue with my user account. I set up a new user account and FCP captures fine with the HDV material from there.

Popwire has an excellent MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder in Compression Master. Much, much better than Apple’s encoder (or anyone else’s for that matter). Does the cube play back uncompressed AVI’s? If so, export out as 10bit uncompressed and then convert that to 8bit uncompressed AVI. But I suspect the AVI format you are refering to is compressed, and in that case I would try the DivX encoder for the mac as well.
