Honestly, according to some tests it’s FASTER than the 2015, since the 2015 switched to AMD and the 2013 still ran NVIDIA with the GT750.
I compared a 2016 MBP to a 2013MBP, and prefered the 2013 and returned the 2016.
Great machine, I still work on it daily, it handles 1080p just fine, has graded 5 features (2 of them 4k, though RED not ProRes, 4k ProRes bogs down).
Considering getting an external GPU to keep it going I love it so much.

I had the same worry with the wire: it’s I think 20 inches, and I was worried that it wouldn’t be wide enough to fit all three panels in between, but it fits with just a hair of room to spare around the wave combo.
The Euphonics is 20″ wide, right? I wonder if it would work as well, though then the control panel would be outside the keyboard space.
Also, I think I remember the Euphonics as being a bit higher off the ground: Kinesis makes supports (purchased separately from the keyboard) to keep the keyboard higher that clip to the bottom of the board, I have them and they work well at their “medium” setting with the Elements, maybe using them at their “high” setting will work well with the Euphonics.

November 30, 2015 at 2:07 pm in reply to: Media Manage in Resolve “Failed” on first clipOh, there weren’t any .jpg’s in this project, it was in old projects.
In the end, it was the hard drive dying that caused the media manage issues. I copied over everything except the corrupt files, I got the corrupt .dng’s sent to me directly by the client, and everything ended up working just fine. Working off the media managed version today!

November 26, 2015 at 2:26 am in reply to: Media Manage in Resolve “Failed” on first clipThanks for the helpful info, I’ll be on the lookout for .jpgs in the future. I’ve had issues with them in the past, but had forgotten.
On this project, I ended up going into finder and seeing if I could move the files by hand that way, and there appear to be some corrupted .DNG files that won’t even duplicate in the finder, so I suspect it’s not an issue with Resolve have unexplained failure (or my life), but a mac issue that Resolve can’t override. If you can’t copy the file, you can’t really media manage it.

November 25, 2015 at 1:37 pm in reply to: Media Manage in Resolve “Failed” on first clipre: “can resolve do that,” since CinemaDNG from the Digital Bolex is just an image sequence, just a folder full of files, they have to be able to do that, right? I mean, it’s just a bunch of stills, so it would mean only copying over just the used files.
re: “log,” I can’t remember when (or if)I had to pull an error log before for Resolve; is there an easy introduction online on how to do that? I’m sure it’s somewhere on the forum, I’ll dig around, but if somebody has a quick link that would be great.
I’m also wondering if it’s just a problem with the hard drive itself: for instance, if sectors on the drive are dying, and Resolve is trying to do a checksum verification but can’t verify the info on the file being copied, it might “fail” to copy. The client went for the absolutely cheapest of hard drives, despite my advice to get something better, and I can’t copy over the entire 6TB project to my drives, so I was hoping to use Media Manage to get the media onto a RAID.
thanks,

Another possibility is that someone had tried to stabilize the shot in the offline editor (FCP, Premiere, Resolve), and when you take it back to that program (as I’m assuming you would after rendering individual source clips), the shot is getting that original staiblization setting re-applied on top of your stabilized shot, making it look nuts.
Try seeing if there are any effects on that shot in your offline edit program and removing them.

Have you tried any of the non-Arri LUTs?
I have one client that shoots a lot of Alexa and for some reason the Arri LUT’s look terrible on it. No idea why: I’ve tried to find out (they’ve been a client a long time), not sure if it’s rental house issues, or something the DP does in camera, but LUT’s I use on other clients footage that looks great just doesn’t work on their footage. Specifically the red color channel goes super duper pink.
I graded around it for a long time, but during a lunch break a few years ago I played around and discovered that for some reason Sony SLog2 (I think) works perfectly on their footage.
No idea why.

May 2, 2015 at 11:44 am in reply to: Maxed out Macbook Pro Retina 15′ = Raw Grading possible?Gotta disagree with the “all laptops are slow” argument.
I have a maxed out retina Macbook Pro 15″ and I’ve done 3 features on it this year, 2 in RED RAW.
Was it as fun as when I’m on a full power desktop with a Cubix and 3 GPUs and a RED Rocket? No, it definitely was it.
Did I deliver great grades for my clients? Yep.
Used a Thunder to SDI connectors from Blackmagic (Intensity mini, I think), rented a flanders, and had a good time.
I travel a lot for work and have definitely gotten last minute remote jobs that I did from a hotel room on the macbook pro.
Yes, you don’t get realtime playback. And definitely, you really only have the performance for 1 OFX node. I tend to grade as much as I can without Neatvideo, then apply the Neatvideo last, set the levels with client, and then turn that node off again for review.
I would rather have a full tower setup, but for now on certain jobs, the Retina does the job.
Buy applecare, though: you are likely to burn through the graphics card (the GT750) and it’ll likely need to be replaced at least once in the lifetime of the machine. That’s what the warranty is for. Also, be sure to stay updated on the CUDA drivers.
But it CAN work.
Now, hopefully, this fall there will be a “2015 Mac Pro” and I’ll get one of those.

April 7, 2015 at 9:19 pm in reply to: DaVinci Resolve causes my iMac screen to display funny in all programs, and sometimes causes the iMac to crash!I’m having identical problems with my Macbook Pro!
It’s super frustrating since it often leads to the system crashing, either during render or while grading.
I’ve gotten 2 new logic boards from AppleCare and I still have the issue.
Hoping to replace my current laptop with a new MacBookPro in the fall when new ones come out and fingers crossed that will fix it.
Very frustrating.
