Chris, you just said exactly what I was about to say. Dave, not only are you rude and unlikable, but your posts are rarely helpful. 99% of the time when I see a Dave LaRonde post I know what’s coming; a condescending personal attack followed by “do it in another program”.

  • Yep, that’s what it looks like, but there’s nothing there. This is with the layer isolated:

Todd Kopriva, you have made my day!

  • Classy move Adobe… update yearly with incremental improvements and force everyone to keep shelling out.

IMHO any and all automated rotoscoping tools look good in tutorials and demonstrations, but when it comes to real footage with real problems, you’re not gonna get the results you want without doing it by hand.

If the rotobrush doesn’t get you where you need (or at least mostly where you need) I would recommend piping the footage into a program designed for rotoscoping (like Silhouette) because roto’ing in AE is bruuuutal.

So many questions like this, and never any answers. I’m really surprised AE can’t do this out of the box. I believe what you need is a plugin by Red Giant Software called Text Anarchy, which comes bundled with a tool called “Path Distort”.

I second this question… would love to know how to do it (without any crazy manual puppet/distorting… I want a long image to bend along the a bezier path)

As far as I can tell, the 3 codecs that retain alpha in a quicktime are animation, PNG, and prores 4444. But they all do a terrible job of compressing. You lose the ability to clamp bit rate, and only animation gives you a quality slider that doesn’t do a very good of compression (even with it cranked down to zero) while looking terrible.

It sounds like it’s just impossible to get great compression with the an alpha channel in a quicktime.

Yes absolutely for this project file size is at a premium. LZW compression isn’t an available option for PNGs (it is for TIFs). What is your recommendation for the absolute smallest file size? (I’ve ran multiple tests but so far nothing is beating a PNG with a bounding box)

Yeah got it, so AE can’t do it.

I will say it’s not just a matter of workflow, my files after being re-rendered through Nuke with the bounding box are about half the file size.
