I believe the Hyperdeck can only record in 24-bit 48khz LPCM audio, so yes.

With HDMI and SDI video, the audio bits are embedded into each video frame. As long as the video frames arrive in order the audio and video will be delayed by the same amount.

The difference between YCbCr and YPbPr is subtle. Historically the YPbPr standard was for defining analog component video signals (over green, blue, and red RCA jacks) and defined the proper voltage range to use for the Y (black and white), Y – B (b/w minus blue) and Y – R (b/w minus red) signal. The YCbCr standard was the digital equivalent where the voltage level was converted into a number (ie 0.775 volts equals 127). Nowadays, the terms are used fairly interchangably.

  • I have a Hyperdeck Studio Pro (not the Shuttle) which does support 1080p60, and I am able to get my computer signal to record (though only in ProRes since there’s not enough bandwidth for uncompressed). I am using a Dell PC monitor P2414H which has support for both RGB and YCbCr color (though not all Dell or other manufacturers monitors will support both). I am using the HDMI out port of the Hyperdeck not a separate splitter.

  • Make sure your computer is not set to 60p. The HDMI to SDI converter supports 1080p60, but the Shuttle only supports up to 1080i60.

I vaguely remember using a program called VirtualDub that could parse through a video file and extract out the good frames. It’s also a good transcoder software too.

Yes, your idea makes sense, and is not uncommon. However you will need a peice of software to do the combining and compositing (green-screen) of the two sources. Something like Wirecast ($500) or vMix ($320). Both of those also have the ability to live stream the output to the internet as well.

Who at Blackmagic said that Media Express was for use as playout software? It’s purpose as far as I understand is to ingest from tape, and lay back out to tape. I don’t even think it has any edit capability at all. Also, the Media Express software has nothing to do with the functionality of the UltraStudio 4k and the ability to use NLE software like Premiere/Avid/FCPX to preview or playout from your timeline there. If you are having compatibility problems with your NLE it is most likely a driver or settings problem.

Also, as you can tell by the forum page, users only check these forums every couple of days.

It is normal for the audio to be out of sync with the video when splitting the audio to something other than the TV you are playing back on. That’s because virtually ALL TV’s do internal processing on the image which causes video delay. However, I’m baffled why the audio pass-through from the TV isn’t delayed to compensate for that. My only suggestion would be to turn off as much processing in the TV as possible. Usually this means switching the picture mode to “Game” (gamers hate lag), setting the scaling / underscan to none (or dot-by-dot or similar) and turning off all the motion compensation, dynamic contrast, 120/240hz (soap opera effect) BS, etc. Just turn it all off.

Those HP monitors are meant to be used as your computer monitor. They only support computer based RGB 444 signals via DisplayPort and DVI-D and does not support embedded audio.

The UltraStudio Mini Monitor only outputs YUV 422 at a maximum of 1080i59.94 or 1080p30. It also embeds the audio into the video signal and can’t keep the audio in sync if you try to split the audio out of your sound card instead. It is far cheaper to just use the Dreamcolor monitor directly as one of your computer monitors, and avoid the audio sync issues at the same time.

While recording, my Hyperdeck Studio and Studio Pro both have a countdown on the upper right hand side of the LCD screen saying how much time is remaining. Though it only does that while recording.
