    If you don’t mind voiding your warranty, some people have successfully removed the top of the case, disabled the onboard fans and installed a 1U rack fan unit directly above it with the fans facing downward. The larger diameter fan means more air at lower speeds, and thus less noise.

    If you record with the H.264 recorder the files will be in a compressed MP4 format which is the native format for YouTube and nearly all websites that host video, the downside is it’s not great for editing or post production. But if your intent is to post it as-is, that’s the fastest way to do it.

    The Hyperdeck on the other hand is designed to capture much higher quality footage for editing in non-linear editor like Final Cut, Adobe Premier, Avid, etc. We also use a pair of Hyperdecks to play back at our second campus and the quality is excellent.

    With the TV splits you have you may want to look into the ATEM 1 M/E 4K, it has 3 AUX outputs instead of 1, but is quite a bit more expensive.

    How many projectors do you have, and do they all show the same thing as each other? I would get the ATEM Production 4k instead of the TVS for 2 reasons. The TVS has no AUX output, use the AUX output to drive your projectors instead of a myriad of HDMI/VGA splitters. The TVS also has a non-standard audio input that won’t connect to most audio mixers without an expensive adapter/converter. The ATEM 4k has standard XLR inputs. The cost of the audio converter and HDMI/VGA splitters more than make up for the cost difference of the ATEM 4k (non-M/E version).

    Also, it’s usually a good idea to put an SDI router like a Blackmagic VideoHub in between all of your sources / projectors and the ATEM. Doing that has saved me multiple times, and is also useful when you want to send a different signal out to a TV in the lobby for a special event, for example.

    As for streaming, if price isn’t an object (a Teradek Bolt is fairly expensive) you could also get a Teradek Cube for live streaming directly to a streaming service like Livestream, Ustream, etc.

    Burning DVD’s isn’t all that common anymore, probably because DVD’s are SD not HD, but there are a few with direct composite, S-video, and even an SDI input version. Otherwise most people capture using their computer (ie an H.264 recorder) or a solid state drive (Hyperdeck Studio) which creates files directly to a hard drive.

  • TV’s support both computer and television signals, however video capture cards only support TV style signals. Look for a color setting in your advanced display preferences to switch to YCbCr color instead of RGB

  • Blackmagic cards were not designed to capture from computer sources, only cameras, vcr’s and video switchers. Computer signals are very different from TV signals.

    However most computers can be configured to mimic a TV type signal. In this case your computer is outputing RGB color, but a television signal is supposed to be in YCbCr color. See if your graphics card has a setting to change the output color format.

    As for the disk speed test, those number are for recording uncompressed video, which hardly anyone does unless you’re making a Hollywood grade film set for theatrical release. Realistically you only need 15-25 MB/s for ProRes or MJPEG

    Not exactly. The Teranex 2D does not support 4K resolutions, and cannot output separate key+fill signals for upstream/downstream key applications used in live broadcasts.

    Also, the Hyperdeck Studio Pro also has a thunderbolt connection so it can capture to computer while recording to disk at the same time.

    Webcams belong to a USB device class called UVC (Universal Video Class). Most professional capture cards with SDI inputs aren’t UVC devices. However there are a couple of UVC devices on the market that accept SDI and/or HDMI inputs like the Magewell XI100DUSB-SDI or the Vaddio AV Bridge

  • Any active B4 to MFT lense adapter will work, the Pocket cinema camera and the Studio camera both have the same lense mount. There’s a couple adapters on B&H for 6-pin and 12-pin powered lenses which are supposed to adapt and provide power to the zoom controller, but I don’t think they are truly “active” (ie no remote iris via the ATEM CCU controls).

    The things you mentioned are typically mutually exclusive. Wirecast and the ATEM TVS are both video swichers. You only need one or the other. You can either plug your camera into a video capture device (like the Blackmagic Mini-Recorder) and use Wirecast, or plug your camera directly into an ATEM switcher.

    For streaming, which software you choose depends on what streaming service you are using. For example, Livestream.com will stream straight from the USB output of the ATEM TVS, no additional software / hardware required, while Ustream or YouTube will not. Wirecast can also stream directly to those services if configured properly.

    In both cases though, Media Express is only for recording to your hard drive, and has no streaming capabilities.

  • I believe Media Express only does constant bitrate recording, though it is dependant on the QuickTime library for capturing in ProRes. Have you tried capturing in QuickTime Pro directly instead of Media Express? Or in an NLE for example?
