Yes, when I reveal in explorer, QT, VLC, PPRO, AE, all play that file with no problem.
Unsurprisingly Xuggle, JMF, Direct Show all that same results, probably because I don’t have them installed.
Another oddity is that CatDV 11 64bit won’t open because it says JAVA is not installed, but I am running the latest version. However CatDV 11 32bit runs, and still gives me the same Failed to show media(-43) error.

We have 2 Macs and 1 Windows connected via Fibre to our Terrablock. Having the volumes mapped through the C: drive is key for us to collaborate. We have mixed feelings about placing/sharing render files or the media cache on a Terrablock volume. It did work for us in that one editor could open up a project and inherit the render files or cache files created by another editor. However sometimes they would mysteriously go offline, sometimes render files can get “stuck” and create odd results on final outputs, and some of my editors swear it’s much slower than keeping the media cache/render on a local (non-OS) drive. All that to say, we tried it, it did technically work, but we gave up on it because of some in-frequent anomalies.

In case anyone missed it… Facilis’ 6.0 upgrade has a new feature for Windows clients that will mount drives to a “Volumes” folder in the “C:” drive root which allows Premiere to relocate media, even if they are spanned on multiple drives. Everything is still offline going between Mac and PC so Premiere does have to relocate everything, but so far I haven’t had to manually reconnect a single file when my drives are mounted this way. Obviously this only applies to Terrablock owners, but thought I’d post it in here if anyone is still researching this topic.
If you are not a Terrablock owner, maybe there is a way to trick your Windows OS to do this? I tried something similar before, but didn’t work nearly as well as Facilis’ new feature.

This thread literally just saved my day! Opening through the AE interface and the double spaces both solved my issue. Thanks guys!

Great tip! It worked using DNxHD 220 8 bit with an uncompressed alpha channel. That will work for now, but I’m still curious about why I can’t get a 444 codec exported with an alpha? I really prefer to have everything coming out of AE as uncompressed as possible since it will ultimately get compressed at least 1 or 2 more times by final delivery.
Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the prompt reply’s! Just to make sure I’m not going insane, I took screen grabs of what I’m doing with the result. They show me creating a simple comp, setting to Millions+, and adding the alpha in the Avid codec box. After rendering, the file has no alpha channel. The attached pics show exactly what I did. Am I missing something?

I’m in the same boat with no none fix as well. I have a Windows workstation and 2 macs connected via Fibre directly to a Facillis Terrablock. Everything is offline every time we switch from a windows to a mac and vice versa.
PPro’s auto locate system isn’t perfect. Even though nothing moves, I have to relocate about 10 files for it to auto-locate everything else. It’s better than the alternative, locating every single file, but still a pain. I also agree, AE seems to do better than PPro, could be my PPro projects usually have way more assets than my AE projects typically do.
I hope either Adobe finds a solution or a fellow cow member does!

Your bit depth might be a culprit too. I’m not sure if I’m the only that has this issue, but whenever I’m working in a Linear 32bit color space, the mere act of selecting a layer can take a couple seconds. Render and RAM preview times are not a problem, it’s like the GUI gets completely bogged down when I’m in linear 32bit mode. I’ve gotten to the point now where I do all my timing and non-color related tasks down in 8 bit mode then step it up to 32bits when I need to start adjusting colors. Otherwise just searching for effects, hitting the keyframe button, and renaming layers will take all day. I should also mention that this can be a spotty occurrence for me, at times I don’t have GUI speed issues in that mode, but I never have issues like that in 8bit mode, no matter how complicated the comp.
p.s. I’m on a Mac OSX 10.7 dual 4 core, 26GB RAM, Nvidia Qudaro 4000, and Adobe CC.

I’m looking at getting one of these too in order to speed up my mac. It’s already maxed on a RAM and I have 1 available PCI slot. Does anybody know if this drive would be of better use as an OS/APP drive? Or as a scratch/render drive?

I’m doing/needing the same thing with a client that’s cataloguing footage with me. I came up with a little work around to get the footage on another monitor, but you have to be a little quick with some keyboard shortcuts…
You can double-click a clip which opens the clip in a separate “pop-out” window. Drag it into the other monitor. You only have to do that once, as it will always open at the place it was last placed. Using this separate “pop-out”screen you can use J,K,L,I,O, to navigate the clip, set ins and outs, and even drop markers. You can use ; and ‘ to move between markers, and the up and down arrow keys will change clips. When you have a selection set in a clip you can hit cmd/cntl+W to close the window, cmd/cntl+U to create a subclip, and finally, enter your metadata for the new sub-clip. Then you can double click another clip and start the process over.
It’s a bit of a pain, but once you get used to running through a bunch of keyboard shortcuts, it becomes fairly natural.
Hope this helps. And I hope CatDV builds in the ability to move the “Movie” window about freely 😉
