I haven’t worked with 720p50 but I suggest that you post this in the panasonic varicam and P2 forums. much better chance to get advice.

Ben
I know what you going through! Had some problems with an Aurora card where fields were swapped 🙁
I created a short DV-Pal clip (3MB) where each field is marked with 1 or 2 and a little arrow progresses from left to right. Using this clip you can easily demonstrate if A. your card is playing out correctly B. your deck recording correctly and C. you FCP capturing correctly.
send me a mail to cofe[at]exemail[dot]com[dot]au and I can send you the file.
Cheers

in addition to the above which is all correct!
basically you want an express card with an Sata interface. Either Sata or eSata.
search the usual Mac places or ask your local reseller.Secondly you need an Sata chassis holding 2 to whatever drives which have a port multiplier build in. Because you only get 2 ports on any express card your chassis needs to support multiple drives on one Sata channel (=cable). So you’ll be able to connect a max of 2 chassis.
I have the Sonnet express card and a chassis from a manufacturer in China (sourced through online computer shop in Australia) which holds 4 drives. Roughly 100Mb read and write on 2 striped drives (I only stripe pairs of 2 to minimize the lost of data when a drive fails but not losing half the storage through Raid 1/ Raid 5 is too much trouble :-))Because the ioHD only works in ProRes anyway this setup will have enough speed to play 1920×1080 25p Prores (haven’t tried higher framerates)
You can go for known and recommneded brands in all of this or if you confident enough like me to take the risk save a few thousand dollars (AUD). Above setup without drives (which I still had) = $AUD 530. Big tip!!! shop at PC stores as all the gear is much cheaper then going through the ‘Mac’ chain, and most likely made in the same Asian factory anyway 🙂

When you imported the footage, did you have ‘remove duplicated frames’ selected in the import preferences?
I had trouble to get P2 footage shot at 720/50p at 25fps correctly imported by FCP. Only way was to use P2Log (ext software) or to shoot at 720/25pn.
Hope that helps. -
from the HD and Broadcast pdf coming with FCPStudio2:
The Panasonic Varicam camcorder can record at the standard NTSC-compatible
rate of 59.94 fps or at exactly 60 fps. Final Cut Pro only supports DVCPRO HD video
transfer via FireWire at 59.94 fps (or one of its variants, such as 29.97 or 23.98 fps).
If you want to capture DVCPRO HD footage via FireWire, make sure you record your
footage with the system frequency of your camcorder set to 59.94, not 60. For more
information, see the documentation included with the Panasonic Varicam camcorder. So 25p from a Varicam can only be captured via HDSDI because it is 60Hz and not 59.94.
I as well don’t understand why Apple doesn’t implement it, but that is the situation right now.
In the moment I tend to capture everything straight to prores in either 720 or even 1080 using the ioHD. But I can’t finally test it unti I get the ioHD…

So, are you confirming that FCP can’t remove the 2:2 pulldown from 720/50p?

Your right David!
Sorry if I offended anyone, specially Bob.
I just felt that his first reply was a bit harsh and was putting pom_boarder down for asking a relevant question.
Lately I feel that some of the replies here on the cow are a bit to much ‘don’t you know this!’ responses. Maybe the trick could be if you feel the answer is to obvious and to simple for once personal liking not to post at all… And yes I too should think more before I type 🙂 (and spell check…)
