So, I’ve made the classic mistake of shooting without nailing down my workflow… sorry (I know how dumb that is)

Shot DVCproHD 720p50, with the intention of getting some nice slo-mo.

Now we’ve got to work with it in FCP and suddenly I’m in over my head.

We’ve already struck out in FCP 5 (import P2)… so tomorrow we’re going to see if we can ingest on FCP 6 using the Log and Transfer.

At this point I’m open to any ideas that are going to make editing easier… such as timeline suggestions, use of frame rate converter, P2log or Cine Tools.

I can afford to down res to SD if I have to… but could do with some advice from anyone who has worked with 720p50 in FCP

I’ll just add that we’ll probably have to cut in FCP 5, we’ve only got access to FCP 6 for a day in order to get the footage converted into something usable.

Feel free to flag up any issues and to talk to me like I’m an imbecile! LOL

I haven’t worked with 720p50 but I suggest that you post this in the panasonic varicam and P2 forums. much better chance to get advice.

You will definitely need FCP 6 to edit 720p50, to get both the Quicktime codec that works with 720p50 and the Easy Setup for 720p25/720p50.

Also check into DVFilm Raylight/Mac which will speed up your workflow for editing 720p50. You can skip the Log and Transfer step and go straight into editing. https://dvfilm.com/raylight/mac

Thanks Marcus, I’ve downloaded the demo… from what I’ve read so far it seems to be the easiest way of working with this footage.

Check http://www.aulich-adamski.de ,they’ve found a workaround for 50p until the next release of FCP is out (site is in German, but the PDFs are in English). Attention: no CC in Color with that!

    Hope this helps,

    Uli

    Thanks Uli,

The German workaround is profoundly smart. In particular the XML export and edit to get a p50 timeline.

The Raylight solution seems to offer an interesting alternative… the demo is pretty impressive.

We’d spotted that “Color” for CC was out, but I prefer Magic Bullet Colorista/Look for grading, anyway. But, thanks for the heads up, because if we had been relying on “Color” for our CC, it’s exactly the kind of snag I was asking people to flag up.

Just one addendum… we went ahead and tested the FCP6 “log and transfer” and you can import 720p50… but, it’s just a pity there still isn’t a 720p50 timeline setting!
