Hi there,
I did return it and used the term “not fit for purpose” and they did let me exchange it. I have a Dell Studio now…i7..all good and has the much needed firewire port 🙂
Thanks for the advice

Also…I don’t even know…does an HP Pavilion Dv6 have a video capture card? That would be another point I could make which would deem it “not fit for the purpose”.
Thanks

It is a shocker that there’s no port….I couldn’t believe it when I realised. He sold it on it’s processing speed as it’s a quad processor with 4 Gb RAM…500 Gb hard drive..so I just thought that all sounded fantastic and based on any other laptop I’ve had (which I have managed to edit on) I expected it to fly along..and I daresay it would if I could just get the footage in it!
Have since been to speak to the guy who really doesn’t want to take the laptop back but is keen to resolve it. Does anyone know if there’s such a thing as a piece of equipment that could plug into the laptop via USB and convert from IEEE 1394 output from my camera but still give me digital quality when I’m capturing using Adobe Premiere Pro?
I guess if there is such a thing and the guy in the shop is willing to give me it for nothing then I’ll go with it..if not then I’ll hope he swaps the laptop for one that does have firewire.
Thanks again guys..what a saga.

hey…looking back on some of my old video’s I really got a lot of stuff from this website..the video wall for one thing! The “bBay Productions” part where the fire cuts through. I definitely got that inspiration from this website.
Gosh there are quite frankly probably too many moments of inspiration I’ve had from this site and I’m just really happy that you guys continually help all us newbs out there 🙂
Good onya!

I know this isn’t in context of the thread..but I would love to know..is “composite video” the same as “analogue”? are they the same thing really.

This is a little different but when I first walked into the shop and spoke to the original sales person I said “I’m sorry to say this laptop can’t capture video”..he said “what do you mean..of course it can capture video”..and I said “I’m so glad you said that..as that’s what I think too..but it doesn’t”…so I then said “it doesn’t have a firewire port”..he says “well..of course it doesn’t…no modern laptop has that”..I said “I had an IBM laptop that had it and it worked fine” and he says ..”Yeh but how old was it..you just don’t get those anymore”..and I said “WHAT..you’re trying to tell me that all the laptops that are sitting out on display right now don’t have a firewire port?”…it transpired that he thought I meant the 6 pin type port..although quite frankly I’ve never seen a 6 pin port in a laptop in my life..but what do I know…I’ve seen the cards that can convert from 4 to 6 then you slot in the card..but never an actual 6 pin in a laptop…jeesh.
maybeeez I know more than I think :-/

Thinking back the guy did ask me the resolution and I did say 720 x 576…as that’s what it is…and I know that’s low res. and the dongle thing they’ve given me does say on the blurb it can handle that.
Maybeez I shouldn’t be saying that..it’s an old camera…4:3…not your HD widescreen camera’s that exist today..but it’s still captures great footage and I love it but I’m not in the video editing business really and bought it back in the day. BUT who’s to say I don’t get back into it..sell this..move onwards and upwards and will need a laptop that can cope..and this most certainly can’t..so it’s not about the camera..it’s about the laptop I say..lol..and it’s capabilities…phew..rant over 🙂
Cheers

Hi there,
I actually read somewhere that the Dv3 had a firewire port!…jeez louise..and the Dv6 doesn’t..that seems too bizarre for words.
Well..I’ll fight the fight as it sounds like the manager is saying stuff which I’m now disproving on here. I’m not the most knowledgeable about the different camera’s out there …newest technology etc but I know that I’ve used firewire or..IEEE 1394..which doesn’t trip of the tongue quite so easily 😉 and I’ve never had a bit of bother and always edited quite happily. But he did throw me when he said his camera uses USB. I don’t even know if it was the manager but it wasn’t the guy who sold me it…as soon as I said I wasn’t happy he went and got the next guy..he was a lot older..but that don’t necessarily make him the manager.
Gosh ..I’ve burbled on somewhat. Thankfully the wedding was a family member and they’re sympathetic and willing to wait out the saga..lol.
Cheers for helping as always..

The guy at the shop said “well it’s not our fault your camera doesn’t use USB” I challenged that and said I didn’t know you could even get such a thing and he said his camera did.
Have any of you ever heard of a camera that has USB out to USB in i.e into a laptop?
Thanks again

Hi there,
Maybe I should ask to swap for an HP Dv8…it looks like it has a firewire port.
Do you think that would be ok for editing?
Thanks again.
