Thanks john, that was going to be my next move since a co-worker mentioned this idea to me as well. It is essentially a copy with the correct settings, thanks for your help. I’m just glad I got this monkey of my back.

David you are right and the rest of the guys who mentioned that dv is 720. That is where my problems lie. I was using cinematize because as you mention David I made a video DVD. I was not transferring files. I happened to fix my problem by mistake only after a few of you guys mentioned 720.

I set the easy setup again and the sequence to match 720 and then imported my source again. Since I was using Walters principals for setting the time line and sequence I always answered yes, then naturally it would make me render the clip since it didn’t match my settings. So just for kicks and grins I said no to the prompt that FCP gives you when things aren’t matched up right and sure enough It let me pull it into the time line.

No render needed. I made a cut and added a transition and no render needed. I just saved the project and I’ve been transferring the rest of my sources since. It works now no problem. I can’t explain why its working but it is. I wasn’t aware that dv was 720, I thought 720 only applied to HD formats. Thanks very much for your help.

Didn’t work Andy. I got this error message after hitting ok on the multi clip drop down. {sequence error. Unable to add clip to sequence possible media limits problem in clip or sequence.} Then it made a small box with my clip in. It is about a qt size box. When I put it on the time line it brought up the sequence doesn’t match clip prompt and It still makes me render it to use it on the time line. Thanks Andy.

Sorry I took so long to respond Dave. I’ve been busy with my day job, lol. It is red. I will go back and print out all my responses and then go through them 1 by 1 and see if they finally help me edit. I still feel it is a setting some where, that is giving me trouble. I used to be able to mark and in, and then mark an out point, then highlight the video line and press apple R and it would render. Now I can only do this with the drop down menu. thanks for your help.

Well 1st of all thank you Walter and the rest of you who took the time to respond to my question. I looked at the demo you sent me Walter, it was great. I have done those things you mentioned. I recently found the right click function on my mouse. Coming from a PC world and Avid editing it has taken some adjusting for me. I was able to check my sequence VS easy set up and they were accurate.

I still had to render my clips. Go figure. You are absolutely correct the latest version of fcp 6 says it will make both sequence and easy set up match, despite this , I’m still rendering. If I add a dissolve, I need to render the transition, and so on and so on. With avid I place it on the transition and when I’m done editing I just simply render the effects and timeline and send it to my final destination. I’m sure that theirs a way to do the same with FCP, I just haven’t found it.

I have a new pro mac 8g of ram and a 2.6 dual core processor. I have a 500 mg drive I’m working with strictly for media. I heard you mention that if your CPU is fast enough you don’t have to render. Is mine fast enough?

Even when I do the things I’m supposed to do I still can’t get this system to work properly. I have Diana Weynands’ FCP for avid editors, aside from the manuals that come with fcp. I still can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. It isn’t a lack of effort on my side believe me, lol. Is their anything else you can think of that might be causing this problem for me. thanks again for all your advice. Carlos Castro

Thanks to all for the responses. I finally got it to work. I did it in the pull down sequence options. I tried that yesterday and it didn’t work, go figure. I obviously missed something. Does anyone know if theirs a podcast some where that will run through a basic setup. No matter whether I use DV tape, imported Stills, or QT movie files, I seem to always have to render the clips when I pull them into the project, then when I used them on the timeline, I need to render them again. If I make any adjustments or changes [Transitions, splice edits, etc…] I need to render that section as well. I expect rendering but not with every key stroke. I’m on hold now with apple support for FCP, going on 1 hr. LOL, this is what it has been like for me,lol. I haven’t given up on FCP, I had some trouble originally with Avid as well. Thanks again all for the support and help.

Thanks Jerry. I have already done all the things you mentioned. This is why I’m frustrated with this software. The same things you mentioned I do at work with Avid. I bought the Apple FCP system for a business I’m starting at home. I was able to render before, don’t know what I did. I was always having to render every clip, every edit, despite using the easy set up feature. Now it won’t render my video. I can hear it playing on the timeline but I see a blue screen with the word render on it. If I scroll with my mouse on the timeline I see my video, any suggestions? thanks
